[1] Scotland the Politically Correct?

The Glorious Twelfth, held on 12 July each year, is a Protestant celebration of the Glorious Revolution in 1688 and the 1690 victory of William of Orange over Roman Catholic James II at the Battle of the Boyne in eastern Ireland. While best known as a Northern Ireland celebration featuring Orange Order (OO) parades, the Glorious Twelfth is additionally celebrated around Scotland with the largest celebration being in Glasgow where an estimated 10,000 marchers, followers, and spectators are expected to gather in 2013.

A 17 February 2013 The Herald article by Judith Duffy titled “Orange Order and Glasgow Council at War over Marches” reports on efforts by the Glasgow City Council (GCC) and the Scottish Government to possibly put restrictions on the yearly celebrations. The OO and the GCC in 2012 agreed that there would be no music played by the marching bands before 9:00 a.m. The OO claims that this year the GCC is trying to ban any marching before 9:00 a.m. music or not.

The Herald article cites an unnamed survey showing that seventy-five percent of Scots want OO and Irish Republican-themed parades to be banned.

The article additionally says that the Scottish Government’s Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism is in 2013 sponsoring researchers from Stirling University to undertake a major study of the impact of marches and parades in Scotland. A spokesman for the Scottish Government remarked: “This Government is committed to getting the proper balance between the right of people to march and the right of communities to be protected. There are no proposals to change policy."

The Free Church of Scotland 2013 Spring Conference is scheduled for 12-14 April 2013 at the Greyfriars Free Church of Scotland in Inverness, Scotland.

The main address will be from the Rev. Dr. Robin Sydserff, minister of St. Catherine’s Argyle Church of Scotland in Edinburgh, Scotland, who will speak on Daniel.

Two sessions on Barnabas and the youth testimony night will be presented by the Rev. Colin Macleod, minister of the Free North in Inverness, Scotland.

Additional seminars include witnessing in small and large communities by Kiltarlity’s Joe Barnard, sharing the good news of Christ in contemporary Scotland with the Rev. David Robertson, and church planting with the Rev. Derek Lamont.

Laura MacGowan and Smithton-Culloden Free Church’s family worker Ali MacDonald will explore the challenges facing Christian families, and how to support each other.

The conference costs UK£25 for the weekend, or UK£12 for a day ticket.

[3] More Meddling with the Military and Muddying the Constitution: President Orders Benefits to Same Sex Couples at DOD

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. It was supposed to be an easy integration of progressive thinking on human sexuality into the United States military. It would be the right thing to do. Despite the overwhelming protests from within its ranks, the administration pressed on with its agenda, and the military did what it always does: salutes and moves forward.

Of course it hasn’t been easy. It hasn’t been progressive. And it isn’t right.

But everything just got a little more complicated—make that: a lot more complicated.

Just when you thought the Armed Forces couldn’t be more distracted by liberal tinkering, the President of the United States, this week, issued an order requiring same-sex couples in the military to receive the same benefits as married couples. Again, the military salutes and goes forward. This time, however, there is a challenge that was greater than any of the other social experiments. The problem in this latest meddling is the law of the land and the Constitution of the United States. In this case the law of the land is the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed by the 104th Congress and signed into law by Pres. Bill Clinton in 1996. Section III of that law forbids the Federal government from recognizing same sex marriage. Now, a new Commander-in-Chief has ostensibly usurped a law passed by the legislative branch of government and signed by the executive branch of government and has demanded the military disregard at least the spirit of that law. Military leadership is left scrambling to decipher the mixed signals. Chaplains, personnel officers, and JAG officers rush to try and make sense of it all. Meanwhile, the battle fronts are shifting. The Jihadist Islamic enemy will not pause the war while we are in yet another sensitivity training class.

Should we just disregard yet another attack on the military by an intrusive and constitutionally schizophrenic administration? For all of this deciphering, training, and amending of orders is not to defeat a ruthless enemy bent on destroying us (and there is Iran and North Korea…). All of the new activity at the Pentagon is to keep up with an administration that is bent on redefining us as a people. And it is time for someone in one of the branches of government to at least call into question the unrelenting interference of the other branch of government.

It is time to stop the meddling with the military while they are engaged with operations to defend the Constitution of the United States. We can’t meddle with the military, muddy the Constitution, and march in unity all at the same time.

There is an answer. It is the moral instructions of the Bible. The Ten Commandments are the ethical standard that Western Civilization is built upon and the only ethical ground on which we can find unity that brings lasting victory. That message may be increasingly anachronistic, but is still the proven truth that will bring the greatest benefits to all.

[2] How Scotland Should Reply to U.K. Threats: “You Promise?”

I’ve written before about independence movements in Europe. Not only are we going to see the European Union crack up and fall apart in the near future (thought timing this kind of thing is virtually impossible) but we find that regions within European nations are themselves ready to secede from the “mother country.” Probably the most well known of these is Catalonia, which is the economic power house for Spain, but has its own language and is tired of being drained by the rest. In Italy, we have the growing Venetian independence party wanting to re-establish the Republic of Venice. This is an exciting time to watch the news and possibly see more manageable and prosperous countries emerge!

Closer to home, we also have Scotland seriously considering separating from Britain and no longer being part of the United Kingdom. How likely is such secession? Likely enough that the government of Great Britain has begun making threats.

“The pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) that runs Scotland’s devolved government plans to hold a referendum on the politically sensitive and emotionally charged subject next year, and has played down the impact of a ‘Yes’ vote on Scotland’s international status. But the fifty-seven-page legal opinion – drafted for the British government by two leading independent experts on international law – said the implications could be far-reaching. The overwhelming weight of international precedent suggested Scotland would be legally deemed a ‘new state,’ it said – a scenario that would force it to re-apply to join international bodies such as the EU, the United Nations and NATO. ‘If Scotland became independent, only the “remainder of the UK” would automatically continue to exercise the same rights, obligations and powers under international law as the UK currently does, and would not have to re-negotiate existing treaties or re-apply for membership of international organizations,’ the government said.”

I can only hope that the Scottish people reply, “You promise?”

Why would Scotland want to be part of NATO? Do the Scottish people feel left out and deprived at the thought of not having a role in supporting Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists in Libya, Syria, and elsewhere? I can’t imagine how it could be considered attractive to support troops all over North Africa and the Middle East. Why on earth would anyone feel threatened by the possibility of losing NATO membership? Why would they even bother to re-apply?

The “danger” of losing membership in the European Union is even more of a joke. Obviously, it the people of Scotland don’t want to be under the United Kingdom any more, it is very likely they don’t want all their laws made in Lisbon rather than make them in Scotland. The EU isn’t going to last anyway. Scotland will still be a functioning country long after the EU is forgotten in the history books.

In fact, it is Britain that has been gaining from Scotland, not the other way around.

“Scottish secession could create serious problems for the remainder of the United Kingdom. Britain’s Trident nuclear submarine fleet is based in Scotland, revenues from Scottish North Sea oil remain important to its coffers, and analysts say Britain would find it harder to maintain its voice in international bodies such as the U.N. Security Council as well as in European Union decision-making.”

So Scotland has understandably felt like they were being treated second class in the UK, all the while they were greatly helping the UK’s power and prestige. No wonder they want to leave.

[3] Christian Defense Coalition Participates in Prayer Vigil and News Conference after Women Dies from Late-Term Abortion by LeRoy Carhart

A prayer service and news conference was held outside the late-term abortion clinic of LeRoy Carhart in Germantown, Maryland on 11 February 2013.

On Thursday, 7 February 2013, a twenty-nine year old New York woman died at a local hospital from a botched abortion at Carhart's clinic.

The Christian Defense Coalition joined the Maryland Coalition for Life in demanding the Maryland Department of Health to immediately close the clinic and the Maryland Board of Physicians to immediately revoke Carhart's medical license.

Reformed Presbyterian minister and Director of the Christian Defense in Washington DC the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, stated:

"First of all, we mourn and grieve for this tragic loss of life and pray for the husband, family and friends of this twenty-nine year old mother who passed away last Thursday.

"Sadly, this woman joins hundreds of others who have died from so called 'safe and legal' abortions since 1973. Our prayer is the barbaric practice of late-term abortions will come to an end as the first step in ending the violence of abortion completely in America.

"LeRoy Carhart has become a hero to the pro-choice movement and was recently 'lionized' in an acclaimed documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

"Yet this 'hero' butchered a woman, left her hemorrhaging in a hotel with no medical assistance, flies out of town after collecting his fee and did not return any of the calls from the woman's desperate family.

"Two years ago we warned the State of Maryland that something like this would happen based on Carhart's past record of unprofessionalism, incompetence and botching a late-term abortion which cost another woman her life several years ago.

"The blood of this woman must clearly be placed at the feet of the Maryland Board of Physicians and Health.

"In light of this horrific tragedy, we demand that the Maryland Board of Physicians and Health revoke Carhart's and the clinic's license so no more innocent women will have to die."

[4] The Society for Truth and Justice, Mourns the Death of Baby Murdered in Botched Abortion Attempt in Which Mother Also Died

On 3 February 2013, Jennifer McKenna Morbelli, a twenty-nine year old women started a process with her accomplice LeRoy Carhart at the Germantown Reproductive Health Center in Germantown, Maryland, meant to murder her unborn baby. Morbelli died from complications on February 7, after murdering her baby.

Pro-life groups were quick to set up prayer vigils and memorials for Ms. Morbelli, even though she died while murdering her unborn child.

For example, Troy Newman of "Pro-Life Nation" said in an e-mail message:

"Jennifer was a beautiful woman was loved and cherished by many, whose future appeared bright. Her passing is an unspeakable tragedy....We are dedicated to working through the legal system to ensure that no more women will suffer Jennifer's fate."

Sadly, in Mr. Newman's statement and press release, he does not breathe one word about the baby that was murdered. Is Mr. Newman advocating better regulations so that women are safe when they take their children to be slaughtered?

David Lewis of The Society for Truth and Justice states:

"Is Mr. Newman a pro-life advocate, or an advocate for people who take their babies to be murdered, such as Ms. Morbelli? Mr. Newman is correct that this is an unspeakable tragedy. We send our sympathies to the Morbelli family for the untimely loss of this woman, however; the greater tragedy is the deliberate murder of a baby girl who had a bright future ahead of her and whose body is probably now decomposing in a landfill. Baby Morbelli will spend her eternity in Heaven, however we should fear for Ms. Morbelli's soul. Hopefully she repented for the shameful, evil, and despicable crime of murdering her own baby before she breathed her last breath. It would be a fearful, dreadful thing to leave this life and face God in the middle of committing a murder."

Andrew Beacham of the Society for Truth and Justice states:

"Many so called 'Pro-Lifer Leaders' are sending warm and kind eulogies concerning a woman who died shortly after murdering her baby; this should cause all of us to wonder if they know a child was just murdered by her mother, and it is mere coincidence the mother happened to die through the course of committing her crime.

"I ask: Where is the concern for the poor murdered baby, the victim in this crime?

"How much sympathy should we have for a KKK member who fell and broke his neck while lynching a black man? How much sympathy should we have for a Nazi soldier who was accidentally locked into a gas chamber with the Jews he was gassing? How much sympathy should we have for a man who died of a 'heart attack' while running down and killing his wife? Why should we have sympathy for a mother who murders her child by an 'abortion' and dies herself while committing this crime? I stand with the victims, not the criminals, and my duty is to seek justice for the babies."

It appears that "pro-life leaders" are losing their way and their focus. Today and forever, members of The Society for Truth and Justice, mourn the death of Baby Morbelli and the deaths of the other 55 million babies that have been snuffed out by murderers before they were even born.

[Editor’s Note: The juxtaposition of this article and the previous article intend no inference that the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney expressed excessive sympathy for the mother and family of the aborted child, nor that Mahoney downplayed the grisly murder of Mrs. Morbelli’s in utero child.]

[5] Gilcomston South Church in Aberdeen, Scotland Leaving Kirk over the Issue of Allowing Active Homosexuals to Serve as Ministers

The minister of Gilcomston South Church (Church of Scotland) in Aberdeen, Scotland, the Rev. Dominic Smart, sent a letter to the church congregation in early February 2013 announcing that he is leaving the church and the Church of Scotland, and has been invited to be the teaching elder (minister) of a new congregation in Aberdeen that will hold its first service on 10 March 2013 at the Copthorne Hotel on Huntly Street in Aberdeen. Pastor Smart and the new congregation are leaving the Kirk over the issue of allowing active homosexuals to serve as ministers.

While counseling civility among the various factions, Mr. Smart’s letter addressed several key problems in the ongoing debate:

“Unity really isn't uniformity. Some folk are troubled by the fact that different people are responding in different ways to the bush-fire in the [Church of Scotland] that was sparked off in Aberdeen Presbytery in January 2009: the issue of same-sex partnerships and the ordained ministry and the underlying issue of the nature of the Bible and its place in the life of the [Church of Scotland]. But uniformity isn't unity.

“I freely say that I have genuine difficulty respecting the response of anyone who's simply sticking their head in the sand. Some are doing just that.

“I have also been shocked at the blatant nationalism cloaked in theological (but woefully threadbare) clothes. Culture Presbyterianism is alive and well I'm afraid, even among some of my fellow-evangelicals.”
