[1] Court orders nutrition and fluids to be withdrawn from disabled Polish citizen

The Order of Mr Justice Cohen which authorises University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust to withdraw all life-sustaining treatment from a middle-aged Polish man, referred to only as “RS”, will come into force at 4 pm on 7 January, the Court of Protection has decided.

In a dramatic last-ditch legal battle, the man’s mother, who lives in Poland, as well as his two sisters and niece, supported by the Christian Legal Centre, sought the Court’s permission to instruct an independent neurologist to examine the man before he would be dehydrated to death.

They relied on the videos taken during a Hospital visit on Christmas day, and the opinion of a consultant neurologist, Rev. Dr Patrick Pullicino, to argue that the man’s condition has improved since the Court’s original decision.

Dr Pullicino told the Court that the man had a 50% chance of eventually recovering from his brain injury so as to be independent within his house.

On 26 December the Foreign Minister of Poland, Zbignew Rau, sent an urgent request to the UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, asking for cooperation in repatriating RS to Poland. Mr Rau’s letter undertakes to use Poland’s Medical Air Rescue Service to take RS for treatment in the Interior Ministry’s Central Clinical Hospital in Warsaw.

A similar proposal was earlier sent by the Polish Ministry of Justice to the Lord Chancellor, Robert Buckland, on Christmas Eve. Diplomats from the Polish Embassy attended the online court hearing, and made submissions to Mr Justice Cohen.

However, in a judgment, Mr Justice Cohen said: “I unhesitatingly reject the suggestion that he should be moved overseas”. He agreed with the treating doctor’s concern that RS might “die in transit” as a result - instead of dying in a hospital bed if hydration is withdrawn.

The judge initially imposed reporting restrictions prohibiting any mention of Poland as RS’s country of origin, but changed his mind and lifted the ban on Friday 1 January 2021.

Mr Justice Cohen also rejected the evidence of Rev. Dr Pullicino, who is an ordained Catholic priest as well as an experienced consultant neurologist. The judge said: “I did not find Dr Pullicino a satisfactory witness” and that he was “concerned” about Dr Pullicino’s “level of objectivity”. He refused the family’s request for permission to arrange for an examination of RS by Dr Pullicino or another neurologist.

The Hospital had already withdrawn nutrition and hydration from RS on Christmas Eve, following a Court of Appeal decision the day before, but then re-instated hydration five days later on the orders of Mr Justice Holman. It has now agreed to delay the withdrawal until 4 pm on Thursday 7 January, to give a few days to the European Court of Human Rights to consider the case.

Sustaining life “not in his best interests”

After RS was taken to hospital following a heart attack in early November, the doctors at University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust concluded within a few days that it was in his best interests to withdraw all life-sustaining treatment. At the end of November, an application was made to the Court of Protection to resolve the dispute with RS’s mother and other members of his family, who insisted on preserving his life.

Following an online court hearing earlier in mid-December, Mr Justice Cohen agreed with the NHS doctors that, with appropriate treatment and care, RS could survive “for up to five years or more”.  Since the heart attack RS has been recovering, but the judge found that he would never recover beyond “a minimally conscious state” where he could barely “acknowledge a presence of another human being”.

RS’s wife, who lives with him in England, tearfully told the Court that RS was a devout Catholic who believed that every life is precious, but also said that if he became seriously ill and “beyond saving”, he would not want to be a “burden” on his family.

RS wanted to be buried in Poland when he dies. The judge refused to allow any questions to be asked to RS’s wife by the lawyers acting for other members of his family, as she was distressed.

In his judgment the judge found that RS “would not want to be kept alive in a state which provides him with no capacity to obtain any pleasure and which is so upsetting to his wife and children”. The judge concluded that it was not in RS’s best interests to be kept alive.

RS’s mother has already spent most of her savings trying to save her son. Her fight to save her son’s life is supported by her children and grandchildren, although not by RS’s wife.

Urgent hearing

The appeal from members of RS’s family was considered at an urgent hearing on 23 December, chaired by Lady Justice King, who in 2018 dismissed three appeals by the parents of Alfie Evans against the orders to withdraw his life support. At the hearing in the Court of Appeal, she commented in open court:

“Sadly, we have all done cases of this kind out of number. We’ve done trials as a matter of hours. We are all used to dealing with these cases at short notice.”

The family complained that they were given too short a notice of the trial, and had only two working days to instruct lawyers and prepare the evidence. The family’s lawyers pointed out that earlier cases of this kind were much rarer, and would only be decided “after many months of tests and with mountains of expert evidence, as well as intense examination of evidence from those who knew the patient to understand his perspective”. They argued that RS’s case was “an example of the pendulum having swung too far the opposite way”, where a rushed decision was made without a proper examination of RS’s Christian belief in the sanctity of life.

The family asked for a short delay in the withdrawal of nutrition and fluids to enable RS’s elderly mother to fly from Poland to the UK to say goodbye to her son. However, Lady Justice King emphasised that was a matter for the Hospital, and the Court’s order came into force immediately.

The same evening, RS’s mother booked the earliest available flight to see her son on Sunday. However, on Christmas Eve the Hospital informed the family that nutrition and fluids had already been withdrawn. Messages begging doctors to continue hydration until RS’s mother’s arrival were left unanswered.

RS’s survival causes “anguish for the clinical team”

The family made an urgent application to the European Court of Human Rights for the violation of RS’s right to life. The government of Poland declared that it wished to intervene to support the family’s case against the UK, and made its own application to ECHR to compel the UK to permit his repatriation. The European Court has indicated that the case will be heard on an urgent basis in early 2021.

The family has spent a rare 30-minute visit permitted by the Hospital taking videos of RS, and have asked an eminent neurological consultant, Rev Dr Patrick Pullicino, to interpret that evidence. In a written opinion, Dr Pullicino observed that the videos showed “a clear emotional response to the presence of family members”, and might indicate that RS’s prospects of recovery were better than suggested by the Hospital. He recommended further tests which could help to diagnose RS’s condition.

At an urgent hearing on 28 December, Mr Justice Holman suspended the permission to withhold nutrition and fluids from RS until this new evidence could be considered by Mr Justice Cohen. By that time, RS had already spent five days without being given any fluids, and the Hospital had written to the family to confirm he was “at the end of his life” and was expected to die within 24 to 48 hours.

However, at the hearing on Thursday 30 December, the doctors working for the Hospital told the Court that RS’s condition had not changed. The treating consultant (who cannot be named under the reporting restrictions) said: “We feel very strongly that his outcome won’t be one which would satisfy him. We should be palliating him, and that period should be made as short as possible, not prolonged by providing hydration.”

When asked by the family’s barrister, Charles Foster, about a possible transfer of RS to his country of origin, the consultant emotionally retorted that the family’s new application to the court had already forced the clinicians to stop administering palliative treatment such as morphine and midazolam, and that was causing “anguish for the clinical team”. He added: “I find it quite offensive to suggest that he should be transferred to another country, where he could die in transit away from his family.”

“I am devastated”

RS’s mother (whose name cannot be published under the Court order) said: “I am devastated that the British authorities have decided to dehydrate my son to death. I want to take my son back to his own country, where I would be allowed to care for him. What the British authorities are trying to do to my son is euthanasia by a back door”.

[2] Every Black Life Matters Drafts an Open Letter of Correction to Raphael Warnock

Dr. Alveda King joins the rally and march at MLK Park

ATLANTA, Jan. 2, 2021 /
Christian Newswire/ -- Earlier today, Co-Founder Kevin McGary of Every Black Life Matters(EBLM), a Christian alternative organization to BLM, along with special Guest Dr. Alveda King of Civil Rights for the Unborn held a prayer rally at MLK Park.  The purpose was to voice concerns over Raphael Warnock's support of abortion as well as to pray for peaceful voting for the upcoming Senate election. After the prayer there was a peaceful walk to Warnock's campaign office where McGary would hand deliver an open letter EBLM had written which has over 300 names of citizens from across the nation.

The letter was first posted on EBLM's website earlier this week.  Supporters were encouraged to add their name to the letter.  The general content of the open letter calls for Warnock to repent and reconsider his position as a man of God who supports abortion.

Dear Reverend Warnock,

As an American with the desire to represent the people of Georgia in the U.S. Senate, you declare yourself an advocate and defender of Civil Rights, a protector against racism and a man called by God to Shepherd others; you must realize that great responsibilities come with those declarations!

As a defender of Civil Rights, you have failed to recognize and embrace that they (civil rights) are undergirded by fundamental tenets to be extended to all Americans. Fundamentally, ALL are created equal and must be provided the right to "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" (see Declaration of Independence), for justice to prevail. It is hypocritical and "anti-civil rights" to reject the right to life for a specific subset of humanity (those in the womb) while you relish and partake in all the fruits of life; this is an ultimate injustice! It is a dishonor to assert being a defender of civil rights while endorsing the cultural forces that withhold the right to life from Blacks as they are disproportionally targeted for "extermination" via abortion. You have fundamentally failed in this regard.

Please correct your ways. ...

Every Black Life Matters is a pro-life, pro-capitalist, pro-nuclear family organization who boldly stands in direct opposition to BLM.  Their mission is to protect black life from conception to death by confronting injustice and deconstructing barriers inside and outside the black community through a national platform of training, networked resources, community organizing and faith building.

[3] Google Notifies Children If Parents Are Monitoring Their Accounts

The following is excerpted from “Google confirms,” Just the News, Dec. 21, 2020: “Google’s child-notification policies received attention when film director Robby Starbuck claimed on Twitter that his seven-year-old child had received a warning from Google that his account was being monitored. ‘Our seven-year-old son has to have google for homeschooling,’ Starbuck wrote on Twitter, ‘so naturally we setup parental controls but look what [Google] did. They sent my son an email telling him we’re supervising his account.’ ‘Your privacy is important to us,’ the company wrote to the seven-year-old boy, ‘and we want to remind you that your parent ... is supervising your Google account.’ Reached for comment, the company confirmed it does notify young children when parents are monitoring their account activity. The company pointed to both the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the recently passed UK Age Appropriate Design Code as examples of child-privacy advocacy to which it adheres. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child-- which dates to September 1990--holds, in part, that ‘no child shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his or her privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his or her honour and reputation.’”

[4] Ontario Pastor Fined $100,000 And Could Face Prison for Holding Church Services

The following is excerpted from “Ontario pastor,” Conservative Review, Dec. 25, 2020: “The Harvest Bible Church in Windsor, Ontario, released a press statement on Thursday, Dec. 24, claiming that the church’s lead pastor, Dr. Aaron Rock, has been fined up to $100,000 and could face a year in prison for holding church services. ‘Police also informed us that they will bar our congregation from entering the church on Christmas Eve, contrary to Section 176 of the Criminal Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We are deeply grieved by these unlawful and immoral acts, having already been banned from meeting on Good Friday and Easter Sunday,’ a statement from the church reads. The church says that the Windsor-Essex County Health United has not responded to any written communication from the church while police close the premises. ... Pastor Rock said that legal action against provincial governments that infringe on religious freedoms is coming soon. ‘Yes there will be lawsuits, they will start in the western provinces, with the goal to overturn their draconian rules. Then they will move to Ontario.’” Pastor Rock told the Post Millennial, “I think our justice system is under the spell of foolishness, but in all honesty whatever the courts decide or not decide, makes very little difference to me. I have a work for God, a mandate for God, and whether the court upholds this ridiculous charge or not, it doesn’t change my convictions” (“Ontario pastor,” Post Millennial, Dec. 28, 2020).

[1] Polish Family in UK Appeal Order for Withdrawal of Food and Fluids from a Severely Disabled Patient

Following an online court hearing earlier in December, Mr. Justice Cohen agreed with the NHS doctors that, having suffered brain damage after his heart stopped for forty-five minutes on 6 November 2020, the middle-aged Polish man living in the West Country, who can be publicly identified only as “RS”, could survive “for up to five years or more”.

Since the heart attack, RS has been recovering, but the judge found that he would never recover beyond “a minimally conscious state”, and it was in his best interest for all life-sustaining treatment to be withdrawn, including nutrition and fluids.

In his judgment the judge found that RS “would not want to be kept alive in a state which provides him with no capacity to obtain any pleasure and which is so upsetting to his wife and children”. The judge concluded that it was not in RS’s best interests to be kept alive.

RS’s mother, who lives in Poland, has already spent most of her savings on legal fees, trying to save her son. Her fight to save her son’s life is supported by her children and grandchildren, although not by RS’s wife. The family has lodged an urgent appeal against the decision, which will be heard tomorrow.

In a controversial 2018 case, Lady Justice King was a member of both judicial panels which dismissed appeals by the parents of one-year-old Alfie Evans against the decision to withdraw his life support.

[2] Stanton Healthcare Founder and CEO, Brandi Swindell, Calls for Pregnancy Resource Centers and Life-affirming Clinics to Resist and Not Comply with HHS if They Issue Regulations or Mandates for Abortion Referrals Under a Secretary Xavier Becerra

NEWS PROVIDED BY
Stanton Healthcare
Dec. 11, 2020

WASHINGTON, Dec. 11, 2020 /
Christian Newswire/ -- If abortion mandates are required by HHS, Ms. Swindell says, "Stanton Healthcare will not comply. We will risk arrest, jail time, and fines to defend our right to provide quality compassionate, medically-accurate care to the women we serve."

The group is asking the Senate to reject Xavier Becerra's nomination and for Mr. Biden to nominate a person who is committed to providing true health care services to the nation rather than promoting a radical extremist political agenda.

Stanton also calls for the over 3,000 pregnancy resource centers and life-affirming clinics to reject and refuse to comply with any HHS regulations under a Biden Administration which would call for abortion referrals or counseling.

Stanton Public Policy Center is a Woman's advocacy and educational group that works on issues of human rights and justice which empower and inspire women.  It is affiliated with Stanton Healthcare which has life-affirming women's health clinics in America and internationally.

Danielle Versluys, Director of Stanton Healthcare of Southern California states:

"Attorney General Becerra has a track record of targeting pregnancy medical clinics like Stanton Healthcare in California. As was made clear by the Supreme Court's ruling in NIFLA v. Becerra, pregnancy centers and clinics should not be forced to refer for abortions against their will, contrary to AG Becerra's efforts.

"As a lifelong resident of California and the director of a fully licensed pregnancy medical clinic in this state, I emphatically urge the U.S. Senate to reject the appointment of AG Becerra as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Becerra has demonstrated that he is unqualified for the HHS position and is radically biased in support of abortion - to the point of defending unconstitutional laws targeting legal clinics which provide charitable services at no cost to underserved, often minority, populations. The policies which AG Becerra has defended go against the principle of 'do no harm,' and attempted to force us to participate in actions which are by nature anti-woman.

"Stanton Healthcare of Southern California would not adhere to a state mandate requiring our clinic to promote and refer for abortions, and we will not comply with any future HHS mandate which would require similar moral compromise."

Brandi Swindell, Founder and CEO of Stanton Healthcare states:

"The nomination of Attorney General Becerra by President-Elect Biden to HHS Secretary is deeply troubling on many levels. It would undo the great strides made in the past four years to protect women's health and human life in the womb.

"AG Becerra has a track record of working against life-affirming women's medical clinics like Stanton. How do we judge future behavior? By past behavior.

"If he is confirmed, it will be a nightmare for women's health. We strongly urge the Senate to oppose the confirmation of AG Becerra and to do everything within their power to protect pregnancy centers and clinics.

"I want to make it clear as the Founder and CEO of Stanton Healthcare: if Becerra becomes the HHS Secretary, our Stanton Healthcare clinics will never refer for abortions regardless of any mandates set forth by HHS. We will not comply. We would risk arrest, jail time, and fines to defend our right to provide quality compassionate, medically-accurate care to the clientele we serve. And we encourage pregnancy centers and clinics across the nation to refuse to be intimidated into compliance with abortion referrals. Now is the time for us to fight and stand like never before."

[3] The Pope Issues Another Heretical Document Contradicting God’s Word

Roman Catholic Pope Francis issued the latest in a long line of papal letters that fly in the face of God’s Word, the Holy Bible. Entitled Fratelli Tutti (“Brothers All”), the encyclical letter calls for global unity. It builds on the Document on Human Fraternity that the Pope signed with Ahman al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar in Abu Dhabi, in February 2019.

It teaches the heresy of the universal Fatherhood of God. It teaches the heresy that all beliefs bring richness to the human family. It teaches that “Jesus Christ is in those who are abandoned or excluded.” It calls for open borders. “Each country also belongs to the foreigner inasmuch as a territory’s goods must not be denied to a needy person coming from elsewhere.” It denounces capital punishment and calls for the “care of the whole planet.” It calls for the “subordination of all private property to the universal destination of the earth’s goods, and thus the right of all to their use,” which, of course, is communism. It rejects the concept of a “just war,” calls for disarmament, promotes the myth that disarmament would produce global peace, and makes the ridiculous claim that war can be stayed “with a word” and “peace can be maintained by peace.”

[4] Parents Lose Custody of Teen Daughter after Refusing to Commit to Sex Change

The following is excerpted from “Parents Lose Custody,” Reformation Charlotte, Dec. 1, 2020: “The parents of a ‘transgender’ teenage girl--born a female, still a female, and will always be a female--has lost custody of their daughter after refusing to commit to hormone therapy to effect a sex change.

According to The Australian, a judge ruled that the confused teenage girl who wants to ‘transition’ into a boy-- an obviously impossible feat to any sane person--on the balance of probabilities, had suffered verbal abuse ‘related to his feelings and expression of gender identity’ (“Parents’ grief as ‘trans teen’ taken into care,” The Australian, Nov. 29, 2020). [This is Australia’s first case of a child removed because parents resisted cross-sex hormone treatment.] ...

[A]ctivist judges and politicians are on the prowl seeking to devour every last semblance of sanity and logical thought. In recent months, Australia has implemented a number of anti-conservative policies that seek to destroy Christianity and the Christian family. Conversion therapy has been banned in most of the country, and [by] the ‘Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill 2020,’ practitioners face a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

These policies have been criticized by the Australian Christian Lobby which argues that parents are left vulnerable to criminalization for refusing to accept and allow their child’s ‘gender transition.’”

[5] National Association of Realtors’ Speech Control

The following is excerpted from “National Association of Realtors,” Frontpage, Nov. 30, 2020: “The National Association of Realtors claims to have 1.4 million members. There will be fewer members before long as the association begins purging conservative real estate agents.

At the center of the storm was an addition to Article 10 which covers various forms of discrimination. ... Even if you’re at home and you post something opposed to gay marriage or illegal migration, you can lose your business. ... When you’re a real estate agent, you no longer have the right to personal opinions. Article 10-5 immediately transformed 1.4 million people into subordinates at the mercy of NAR brass who have the authority to determine what political or religious views they can hold. ‘It means that we never take our hands off, no matter where we are, no matter what we do, we are always licensed and we are always a member of the National Association of Realtors.’

New York State Association of Realtors President Jennifer Stevenson warned. Never taking your ‘hands off’ is endemic to socialist tyrannies and has no place in America. ... Anyone can bring an ‘ethics’ complaint which will lead to a ‘hearing’ with ‘witnesses’ and ‘counsel.’ ... And if they lose that hearing, then not only will they be expelled from the NAR, but the state real estate licensing authority will be told that the agent violated the ‘public trust’ which can lead to the loss of their license. Say the wrong thing on Facebook and lose your license, your business, and your livelihood.

“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” [Ezekiel 33:6]

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Ephesians 6:12]

[1] Aborted Human Remains Used in the Production and Testing of Vaccines

Dec. 10, 2020

NORCROSS, Ga., Dec. 10, 2020 /Christian Newswire/ -- Georgia Right to Life (GRTL) announced today its policy opposing vaccines whose development exploited the intentional death of a pre-born child.

"The production and testing of vaccines using the remains of aborted human beings, regardless of manner of conception, is morally wrong and must be opposed. GRTL strongly urges the rejection of such vaccines," the policy statement says.

"We're not giving medical advice to anyone," explained GRTL President Ricardo Davis. "We're just presenting the facts that most groups are ignoring, because many pro-life advocates will have a problem taking such a vaccine."

Davis noted that COVID-19 vaccines developed by both Moderna and Pfizer/BioNtech employed a testing process, either by them or a third party, that used a cell line obtained from the kidney of an aborted child.

A third vaccine being pursued by AstraZeneca is even worse. It uses that same cell line for production of its vaccine.

"Exploiting the death of a child for any reason--no matter how noble—is morally wrong. It denies the Personhood of a pre-born child."

The testing phase involves using animals—the standard protocol of vaccine development before human trials begin.

Specialized mice were "humanized," meaning mice embryos were implanted with cells from an aborted child that were programmed to develop into humanized lungs.

Researchers then inject them with the vaccine, as well as a coronavirus similar to COVID-19 to test the mice's immune response.

"There are alternative, ethical ways to conduct such tests, as well as to produce a vaccine," Davis said. "I encourage everyone concerned about the link between abortion, vaccine development, biomedicine, and human trafficking to demand that government support the development of vaccines that don't rely on the brutal act of abortion."

Experts say they really don't know how long a COVID-19 vaccine will be effective after it's taken. Predictions range from six months to a year. Moderna recently announced it may be as short as three months.

For more information on other vaccines being pursued go to the highly respected Lozier Institute.

Georgia Right to Life promotes respect and effective legal protection for all innocent human life from earliest biological beginning through natural death. GRTL is one of a number of organizations that have adopted Personhood as the most effective pro-life strategy for the 21st century.

[2] Court to Hear Four Christian Preacher’s Case Against Police after Brutal Bristol Arrests

December 7, 2020

Today, four Christian preachers, known as ‘the Bristol Four’, will challenge Avon and Somerset Police over their brutal arrests following a dramatic incident in July 2016.

Beginning on Monday 7 December at Bristol County Court, Mike Overd, Don Karns, Mike Stockwell and AJ Clarke will bring claims against the police for: assault, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, misfeasance in a Public Office, and infringement of their Human Rights, in particular articles 9, 10 and 11 of the European Convention of Human Rights.

The case raises significant issues on the right to freedom of speech and the freedom of Christian preachers in the UK to manifest their religious beliefs and to have the right to freedom of assembly in public.

One of the preachers, Mike Overd, will also challenge the police on what his Christian Legal Centre lawyers describe as an eight year ‘sustained campaign of harassment’ against him.

The harassment has included one police sergeant appearing on local BBC television in 2014 to encourage business owners “if they’re offended” by Mr Overd’s preaching, “to record any evidence on their mobile phone and send it to us.”

Rather than reducing crime in Taunton, this led to an increase in abuse against Mr Overd from members of the public. No video evidence was ever submitted to the police which led to a conviction against him.

Dramatic video footage

The case primarily centres on a dramatic piece of body cam video footage revealing the shocking arrest of Mr Overd in Bristol City Centre on 6 July 2016.

That day, Mr Overd and his three friends were preaching outside Bristol's Broadmead Shopping Centre, ironically near the statute of John Wesley (who known for his street preaching). The four took it in turns to preach, and as they did, a crowd gathered.

At points, the crowd was loud and aggressive, some swore and were abusive towards the men. However, the vast majority of the crowd wished to engage in lively debate with the preachers. Members of the public debated all manner of topics, the differences between Islam and Christian belief, sin and life after death.

After the gospel had been proclaimed for at least a couple of hours police officers said the amplification needed to be turned off. Another speaker had set up, across the precinct, to speak about Islam and the police officer had decided competing amplification was unwelcome. The Christians turned off their speaker.

However, unexpectedly mounted police arrived on the scene and put a stop to the public speaking by positioning their horses between the speakers and onlookers.

Seeing his friend moved aside by the police on horseback, Mr Overd stepped up to preach again and was told by another officer, PC Phillipou, that he was "causing a disturbance" and was "not welcome".

The officer told Mr Overd that he was going to give him a Dispersal Notice, but instead of doing so, video footage reveals Mr Overd being brutally pulled to floor and screaming in pain. He was then handcuffed and dragged off to a police van and held in police custody for over seven hours.

Why have you arrested me?

The policeman said to Mr Overd: ‘there is a line of freedom of speech…you were aggravating people…challenging homophobia….challenging muslims…”

To which Mr Overd says: “We were just saying what the Bible says.”

The policeman says: “That’s fine,” to which Mr Overd responds: “Then why have you arrested me?”

In the footage the policeman admits, when it is suggested by Mr Overd, that he does not know what Mr Overd is being arrested for. PC Phillipou then had to radio colleagues for answers.

Two other preachers, both of whom were visiting from the US, were arrested because they could not give an address to the police as they could not remember where they were staying.

All four men were detained in custody for over six hours following the incident and were questioned extensively at a later date before being charged.

During the trial that followed, the prosecutor in court said that quoting parts of the King James Bible in modern Britain, as the preachers did, should be considered "abusive" and "a criminal matter".

All four men were eventually acquitted of all charges. There has never been an apology or any admittance of wrongdoing from Avon and Somerset police.

Public preaching a fundamental right

Ahead of the hearing, Mr Overd said: “We have faced no alternative but to bring this case as the police must be held to account for their actions for what they did in July 2016 and moreover for their actions over the past eight years.

“The freedom to preach the message of the gospel on the streets of the UK to the lost, is one of our fundamental rights in this country. If we lose that right, we will begin to lose every other freedom.

“I believe I should be free to express views of public interest, including on culture or morality. I never use profanity, I do not attack people, however I accept that I do criticise ideologies, other religions and certain sexual practises. Ultimately free speech is worthless without the freedom to offend.

“The attitude and approach from the police is that if they receive a report that a Christian is being ‘offensive’, they turn up arrest first, ask questions later. There has to be a cultural shift in British policing, not just in Somerset, but across the UK.”

‘Offence’ is subjective

Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre, said: "Mr Overd and his friends are motivated by love. They want to share the good news of Jesus with people who might not otherwise hear it. Sometimes that means addressing the false claims of other religions or ideologies.

"Robust debate is often necessary, especially when objections are being raised or abuse is hurled. We shouldn't be afraid of it.

"The aggressive treatment of Mr Overd and his friends by the police and prosecution is shocking. The police should be defending freedom of speech, not clamping down on it.

"The standing point for the police is whether people are ‘offended’. This is an entirely subjective concept and cannot be used as the primary means to decide whether lawful preaching can be stopped and the preachers deprived of their freedom. Any suggestion that there is a right not to be offended must be strongly resisted. In today's democracy, we need the freedom to debate, challenge and disagree.

"We cannot allow the gospel to be shut out of public debate, and that is what is at stake in this crucial case.”

[4] A Burning and Shining Light: The Testimony and Witness of George Whitefield Available from the Author

Catch the glory and the life-altering time of the Great Awakening in Britain and America during the heart of the 18th Century. In the thick of this monumental time in history was GEORGE WHITEFIELD.

He rose from obscurity to become one of the most influential preachers in terms of conversions and mass evangelism since the time of Christ and the apostles. Whitefield spoke with clarity and conviction. Everywhere we journeyed, there were conversions, and places were changed. Church buildings could not contain the crowds before the days of modern communication. Obstacles and opposition neither hindered the great preacher.

Now Dan Nelson, recently retired Pastor of First Baptist Church Camarillo, California (serving there 35 years) has captured Whitefield in probably the most concise chronological biography of his life. Following a lifetime of study, Nelson puts you back in time when the spirit of Revival lingered over two continents. Learn of this spiritual giant of whom Spurgeon said was his "human model of ministry and preaching."

"A Burning and Shining Light: The Testimony and Witness of George Whitefield" by Dan Nelson is available by contacting Dan thru messenger on Facebook for $17.99 plus $2 for shipping. Don't miss this book. It can inspire and challenge you. Dan can be contacted through email at gospel4you@fbccamarillo.com or called at 805 484-2879.
