[1] Reformed Theological Seminary Appoints Pastor-Theologian Ligon Duncan as New Chancellor
The Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) Board of Trustees has elected Dr. J. Ligon Duncan, III, as chancellor and CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary. Duncan is currently the John E. Richards professor of systematic and historical theology at RTS in Jackson, Missippi, and the senior minister of historic First Presbyterian Church (1837), where he has served for the past seventeen years. He is the president of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and served as President of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals from 2004-2012. Click here to visit the RTS chancellor Web page.
Duncan will continue to teach systematic and historical theology for RTS, and will serve as senior minister at First Presbyterian Church until the end of this year. His appointment as chancellor and CEO of RTS follows his good friend Dr. Michael Milton, who retired as chancellor in May 2013.
“We are thankful the Lord has answered our prayers for a new chancellor, and that Dr. Duncan has accepted the call to lead RTS. We began this search expecting it to take an extended amount of time, but we were gratefully surprised at how quickly consensus was reached,” said RTS Chairman of the Board Richard Ridgway. “Dr. Ligon Duncan is uniquely gifted for this important leadership position at RTS. He is a well-known theologian, pastor, preacher and churchman not only in the PCA but across the spectrum of evangelical and Reformed churches, here in North America and around the world. As an RTS professor for twenty-three years, he knows our institution and our faculties know him as a man who is both a scholar and a pastor. He is an effective communicator with great leadership ability.”
Duncan has taught for RTS since 1990. He has lectured for RTS in Jackson, Charlotte, Orlando, Memphis, and for our Global program, as well as in Vienna and Hong Kong. He has delivered lectures and papers at various universities, seminaries and national meetings, and has preached or addressed major conferences as a member of the faculty representing RTS.
He earned the Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Edinburgh, New College (Scotland) in the field of Patristics, or what is now often called Early Christian Studies. His doktorvater was the renowned Reformation and Patristic scholar, David F. Wright. Duncan did both his M.Div. (cum laude), and his M.A. (in Historical Theology) also cum laude, at Covenant Theological Seminary, where he was mentored by the respected church historian, David B. Calhoun. Duncan received his B.A. (History) from Furman University. He has authored, co-authored, edited or contributed to more than thirty-five books.
Having served on the staff at The Covenant Presbyterian Church of St. Louis (under the late Rodney Stortz), Duncan's pastoral experience began in his twenties. He was licensed to preach by his presbytery in 1985 and supplied pulpits in churches in the U.K. throughout his time there in the late-1980’s. In 1990 he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and joined the faculty of RTS in Jackson, where he was subsequently appointed the John R. Richardson professor of theology. During this time, he also served as an assistant minister at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson (under his boyhood pastor, Gordon K. Reed) and then as interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City, Missippi. He left his full-time position at RTS to become senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson in 1996 (only the twelfth in that congregation’s 177-year history), but continued to teach at RTS as adjunct.
In 2004, Duncan became the youngest minister ever to serve as moderator of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America. He helped co-found Together for the Gospel in 2006, which has become a major catalyst for the young reformed resurgence. He is founder and chairman of Reformed Academic Press and serves on numerous boards/councils including the Highland Theological College, The Gospel Coalition, and the Reformed African American Network. He is the chairman of the RUF Midsouth Joint Committee which gives oversight to university campus ministry throughout the region.
His wife Anne is an RTS alumna with a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy. She is currently on the faculty of Jackson Preparatory School. Ligon and Anne are the delighted parents of two wonderful teenagers and they plan to continue to reside in Jackson.

[4] Bangladesh Study: Induced Abortion Raises Breast Cancer Risk by More Than Twenty-Fold
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer reported today on a Bangladesh study published in the Journal of Dhaka Medical College on risk factors for breast cancer, led by Dr. Suraiya Jabeen. The authors found a statistically significant 20.62-fold increased risk among women with abortion histories - by far the highest risk elevation reported among Seventy-Three published abortion-breast cancer studies. [1,2]
Professor Joel Brind (Baruch College, City University of New York) said the reason why the risk elevation is so high is because it’s “a measure of RELATIVE risk.” Observing that women in Bangladesh have very traditional childbearing patterns that reduce breast cancer risk, he explained:
“Almost all the women are married (ninety-seven percent currently married; the rest widowed) and with child by the time they are twenty, and all of the kids are breastfed. Ninety percent had their first child at age twenty-one or younger (ninety-nine percent of controls did). They typically neither take contraceptive steroids nor have any abortions. Nulliparity (childlessness) or abortion before first full term pregnancy (both of which mean no breastfeeding) in a population in which breast cancer is almost unheard of, makes the relative risk very high.
“Although the authors did not include a measure of their abortion link’s statistical significance, their raw data was complete enough to calculate a ninety-five percent confidence interval of 12.85-32.51, making abortion by far the strongest and most significant risk factor observed in these Bengali women. In plain English, women in this population who had any induced abortions were more than twenty times as likely to get breast cancer, compared to women with no abortions.”
Additional reproductive factors influencing breast cancer risk included: use of oral contraceptives (1.47-fold increased risk); early first birth at or before age twenty-one (sixty-five percent reduced risk); having two or more children (seventy-one percent reduced risk); and increased number of months spent breastfeeding (seventy percent reduced risk).
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer is an international women’s organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer.

[6] SAT-7 Brings Firsthand Clarity to Western Media Misunderstanding of Deadly Crackdown on Egyptian Protesters
In the wake of a bloody government crackdown on Egyptian protestors that left hundreds dead and thousands injured, SAT-7 Christian satellite television broadcasts from Egypt are bringing a firsthand view of the unethical practices of the Morsi presidency and its sham of “democracy,” with insights and understanding not currently reported by mainstream
Amid the ongoing destruction of churches by supporters of ousted president Morsi, Egyptian Christian leaders are responding with reconciliation and forgiveness, stressing that the church is not mere buildings, but rather “the body of Christ” composed of people and their faith in him.
SAT-7 has been covering the political situation since the anti- and pro-Morsi protests began at the end of June, helping viewers better understand and engage with the situation from a biblical faith perspective through its current affairs programming, broadcast live from Egypt.
In his June 2012 election, Morsi received only 13 million votes from the Egyptian population of 83 million, according to Terence Ascott, CEO and founder of SAT-7 International (www.sat7usa.org) in a recent commentary (www.ow.ly/nXTsz).
Taking wide-sweeping power without censure, he filled key government positions with former Muslim Brotherhood leaders, some of whom had previous convictions for violence or incitement to violence, and rushed through a pro-Islamic constitution despite protests and boycotts from liberals, moderate Muslims and Christians, said Ascott. Morsi refused to call for new elections, as he had previously agreed to do after a new constitution had been adopted.
Into this political scenario, with a failing economy and crumbling infrastructure, while as many as 30 million people protested during Morsi’s first anniversary, the army responded and removed him from office, said Ascott. Following an ensuing six weeks of pro-Morsi occupation of public squares, demanding his reinstatement, blocking all traffic and promising retribution against the army, police, liberals and specifically Coptic Christians, deadly violence broke out August 14 as the army moved in to disburse them.
“The Muslim Brotherhood has been very effective with the Western media, portraying themselves as ‘victims’ and the army as a coup,” said Ascott. “This is not the version of the truth that resonates with the vast majority of Egyptians.”
Scores of business, homes, police stations, hospitals and other public buildings have been destroyed by Morsi supporters. At least 40 churches, a monastery, three religious societies, three key Bible Society bookshops, three Christian schools and an orphanage have been burned or otherwise destroyed.
"Following [Coptic Orthodox] Pope Tawadros II’s statement that the current attacks on churches were expected, many Christians are stating that they consider the church buildings a sacrifice to their beloved Egypt,” said Farid Garas, SAT-7’s Egypt executive director.
Some Muslims who rushed to help preserve churches and Christian properties were urged by Christians to return home. “Buildings can be rebuilt, but you are priceless, so stay safe,” they reportedly said. “Buildings are not the church. The Body of Christ is the church, and we are firmly intact.”
General Sisi, commander-in-chief of Egyptian armed forces and Minister of Defense, subsequently announced the army will pay for renovating all the damaged churches.
SAT-7’s staff in Cairo has worked from home, and all are reported safe. According to Garas, they plan to broadcast their current affairs program “Bridges” as usual on Saturday, to cover the attacks on churches and the decision of Christian leaders to refuse outside protection, showing that the church is standing for freedom over force.
“It seems we are experiencing a pruning process of the living body of Egypt,” said Garas.” It hurts, but it is important. We are sure we will see the fruit of freedom, and we trust the Creator who is in control.”
Prayers are requested for Egypt, the largest country in the Arab world with the largest Christian community in the Middle East:
-- For current violence to end soon
-- For the re-establishment of effective rule of law and order for the benefit of all citizens
-- For effective protection of church and other property against attacks by extremists
-- For Egypt to be governed for the benefit of all its citizens, with people of different persuasions able to live alongside one another peaceably
-- For Egyptian Christians to have opportunity to play an increasingly prominent and effective role in addressing the needs of all Egyptians and helping to bring healing and reconciliation in the country

[7] The Muslim Brotherhood Are Destroying Egypt -- If Given the Opportunity They Would Do the Same to America: A Message to President Obama and the American People
Since its inception in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has engaged in bloody Jihad against people of all faiths, and even against Muslims who don't believe in their brand of Islam. When they announced that they abandoned violence, it was just a tactical maneuver to gain acceptance that would enable them to reach their goals.
After their power grab in Egypt following the revolution, their desire to achieve their own agenda made them blind to Egypt's pressing problems, leading the country to the verge of bankruptcy. Twenty-two million Egyptians signed a "Rebel petition" demanding changes. Then, when they saw no action, over 33 million Egyptians took to the streets demanding the ousting of President Morsi. The Armed forces had to side with the will of the people and removed him from office.
Thereafter, the Muslim Brotherhood staged sit-ins, occupying two locations in Cairo; Rabaa and Nahda. During their sit-ins which lasted about a month and half, the Brotherhood committed all kinds of atrocities, including torture and murder. They blocked major traffic and made life unbearable for the inhabitants of buildings in the areas. They used adjacent streets as toilets, causing health hazards. They stockpiled heavy weapons and large amounts of ammunition. After giving them several warnings, the police finally decided to disperse them with the use of non-lethal force. This is no different than our government dispersing the Wall Street Protesters.
The days that followed have been chaotic. The Brotherhood has attacked countless government offices. Thus far across Egypt thirty-two churches have been completely burned, nineteen churches have been damaged, five Christian schools and seven church-related buildings were destroyed, along with 190 homes, businesses, hotels and pharmacies owned by Christians.
President Obama: The response of the American administration has been disappointing. Trying to lay the blame on both sides, as if they were equally responsible is unfair. Neutrality sometimes can amount to a blatant aggression. We expect you to side with the victims and the overwhelming majority of the Egyptian people and to condemn the aggressors. Thank you.

A 16 August 2013 Daily News article by Deborah Hastings titled “Abused and Experimented on, Survivors of Canadian Indian School Receive Apology from Church” reports that during the week of 12-15 August 2013, The Presbyterian Church in Canada issued an apology to survivors of the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Ontario, Canada who in the 1940’s and 1950’s “were abused, subjected to medical experiments and put on starvation diets.”
Canadian food historian Ian Mosby has issued a new report about “the government program of taking aboriginal children from their families and installing them in dormitory schools across the country, where they were banned from speaking their native tongues, forced to attend Christian church services, and subjected to physical and sexual abuse by staff members including priests and nuns.”
