[2] Dwindling Congregation of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Hungarian Reformed Church No Longer Able to Pay Township Cemetery Maintenance Fee
A 27 November 2013 The Tribune-Democrat editorial titled “A Matter of Grave Interest | Should Township Take Control of Cemetery?” reports that the Hungarian Reformed Church on Chestnut Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has only fourteen congregants attending the twice monthly services, and the church is no longer able to pay the US$400 annual cost to maintain its cemetery in Richland Township.
The church’s pastor the Rev. Albert Kovacs (Calvin Synod) explains that the church is having financial difficulties and is unable even to adequately maintain the church building. He has asked the Richland Township supervisors to take over maintenance of the cemetery.
The Tribune-Democrat editorial does not think it appropriate that the township taxpayers pay the cemetery maintenance costs, and instead asks for any willing volunteers to agree to maintain the cemetery that is such an important part of the historical record of the region.
[Editor’s Note: If there are no volunteers to continue maintaining the cemetery, perhaps someone in the Calvin Synod community familiar with the social network fundraising tool GoFundMe can set up a possible means of meeting the cemetery maintenance costs.]
