[1] PCA Central Carolina Presbytery Passes Constitutional Revision Overture Granting Biblical Marriage Exclusivity Full Constitutional Authority

The Central Carolina Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), in its stated meeting of 24 January 2009, passed an overture to amend the PCA Book of Church Order - Chapter 59 The Solemnization of Marriage - to remove wording that binds obedience to civil law on matters of marriage, and enjoins ministers to perform only marriages that “do not transgress the laws of God”; then begins the process of granting Chapter 59 full constitutional authority.

The overture was undertaken in response to worldwide and domestic legislation and court orders legalizing homosexual marriage and compelling churches and ministers to accommodate these marriages.

[2] Myanmar Officials Close Christian Churches

Authorities in Rangoon, Myanmar (Burma), during the week of 11 January 2009, increased restrictions on Christian activity in the city and in the surrounding areas.

Several major city churches, including Wather Hope Church, Emmanuel Church and the Assemblies of God Church, were forbidden from holding church services, and a 5 January 2009 ban on Christians meeting in “unauthorized” places (residences) was continued.

The Burmese news agency Mizzima quoted an unnamed Burmese Christian who claimed that 80 percent of churches in Rangoon were affected by the order.

[4] Presbyterian Church of Wales Moderator Calls for Tolerance in His Christmas 2008 Message

In his Christmas 2008 Presbyterian Church of Wales (PCW) Moderator’s message, the Rev. Haydn Thomas of Cardiff, Wales defined 'Good will to all men' as “…showing tolerance towards all people, no matter what their creed, race, gender or politics.”

Thomas decried two National Assembly of Wales members, “…who made a show of inviting the poet Patrick Jones to insult Jesus Christ by reading his poems at the National Assembly. It is regrettable that such persons represent us, but Christians have been persecuted for two thousand years, and still face violent persecution in places like the Indian state of
Orissa. We can rise above such offence and show tolerance towards people with different views from us.”

Thomas urged that “…we
show the value of Christian work and love…” and said that, “…good will must extend beyond the first of January.”

The PCW Moderator closed his message saying, “Let us all celebrate Jesus’ life as well as his coming – and remember his tolerance and love towards everyone he met, over Christmas and during the whole of 2009.”

[7] Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) Teaching Elder Explains Development of Covenant Eyes Internet Pornography Filter

Teaching Elder Dr. Don E. Galardi of Community EPC in Owosso, Michigan in the 22 January 2009 edition of EPNews tells how twenty-five years ago he represented the EPC as a two-year delegate to the National Coalition Against Pornography (today called the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families), and how no one then would have imagined today’s proliferation and access to pornography due to the World Wide Web.

Dr. Galardi explains that Community EPC Ruling Elder Ron DeHaas asked his computer whiz son-in-law, Collin Rose, the son of EPC Teaching Elder Jim Rose, about some way for him to have greater oversight of his family's use of the Internet as it relates to pornography.

Rose’s answer was to develop the “Covenant Eyes” pornography filter and accountability tool that presently has more than 53,000 subscribers worldwide.

Galardi concludes: “Internet pornography is the hidden sin in many church members' lives, which routinely affects the spiritual health of congregations. Consider promoting its use among your church members. It is the most useful tool I know of in protecting our families and church staff from the subtle ploys of the evil one. It is tested, proven, and effective in dealing with ungodliness that is beamed through the screens of PCs found in our homes, work places and church buildings.”

[8] United Reformed Church and Methodist Church in the United Kingdom Endorse Africa Day of Prayer Held 25 January 2009

The United Reformed Church (URCUK) and the Methodist Church in the United Kingdom endorsed and urged participation in the call by the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) for an Africa Day of Prayer on 25 January 2009 in which the suffering people of Zimbabwe were remembered in prayer.

Zimbabwe is suffering a cholera epidemic, with about 40 thousand people already infected and 1800 dead. Food is scarce, political violence continues, and schools have not been able to run properly due to the financial and social crisis.

Zimbabwe has been ruled by the Marxist dictator Robert Mugabe since coming to power in 1980 in the country formerly called Rhodesia.

[10] RCA U.S. Army Chaplain Clark V. Poling Among Honored at 65th Four Chaplains Memorial Service

The 65th Annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service was held 25 January 2009 at New Bedford, MassachusettsSeamen's Bethel to honor the four U.S. Army chaplains who sacrificed their own lives by giving their life jackets to other soldiers aboard the USAT Dorchester troop ship that sank off the coast of Greenland on 3 February 1943 after being struck by an enemy torpedo.

One of the four, Chaplain First Lieutenant Clark V. Poling, was an ordained minister in the
Reformed Church in America and served at the First Church of Christ in New London, Connecticut and at the First Reformed Church in Schenectady, New York, before entering the chaplaincy shortly after the start of World War II.

The four clergymen linked arms, sang hymns and prayed as the Dorchester went down, and survivors reported that the last thing they heard as the ship slipped beneath the north Atlantic water was the Lord’s Prayer. Each was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart posthumously.

The editor remembers in the early 1960’s seeing a depiction of the four Dorchester chaplains in their final moments at a now long-closed wax museum in Washington DC.

[11] Observing the Sabbath on the Isle of Harris, Scotland Contravenes Equality Legislation Says SportScotland

The Isle of Harris Golf Club on the Isle of Harris, Scotland observes the Sabbath by closing on Sundays as do the other public facilities on the island, as is common on the predominantly protestant western islands of Scotland.

The Golf Club has applied for a GB£75 thousand grant from SportScotland, the Scots national sports agency, to fund improvements to the golf course. Though the grant application remains under consideration, the chairman of SportScotland, Louise Martin, believes that Sabbath observation by public entities in many of the western islands of Scotland violates equality legislation enacted in 2006 that forbids funding entities not accessible by all religions and beliefs, and several other categories.

SportScotland is proposing a compromise whereby golf course employees would be off on Sundays, but golfers could pay using an honor system. Free Church of Scotland at Leverburgh, Isle of Harris minister the Rev. Ruairidh Maclean says "I would not be terribly happy with this and I would imagine a significant proportion of the community would not be happy.”

Under the proposed improvements, Highland and Islands Enterprise and Western Isles Council would pay the additional
GB£75 thousand required to complete the renovations, but they do not insist that the golf course be opened on Sundays.

[12] Church of Scotland Minister Convinces Restaurant to Open on Sundays

Church of Scotland minister the Rev. Marion Dodd, a regular customer at Le Jardin in The Knowles, Kelso, Scotland, suggested to owner John Robertson that he begin opening on Sundays. Robertson said, “I was very surprised that a minister of all people would ask us to open on the Sabbath, but after discussing it with my wife we decided to give it a shot and follow pastoral advice.”

Dodd wanted her congregation to help the business out as trade slowed at the end of the tourist season, even stopping one of her Sunday morning services after the sermon to invite people to join her at the cafe and finish worship there. Instead of having the usual collection on that Sunday, members of the congregation were encouraged to buy tea and cakes.

In an effort to better link the church with the local community, the Kirk Session is now exploring plans to hold occasional services and other events at the eatery.

[13] Scotland’s Former First Minister Refused Act of Succession Repeal to Prevent Ulster Unionist Backlash

Former First Minister of Scotland, Donald Dewar, in 1999 fought repeal of the Act of Settlement to prevent the alienation of Ulster unionists, according to documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The 1701 Act of Settlement says that no Catholic can inherit the crown and any member of the royal family who marries a Catholic is barred from succession to the crown unless his or her spouse agrees to renounce the Catholic faith.

Address:Removal requested ()[4] Christian Defense Coalition Calls US$150 Million U.S. Presidential Inauguration Extravagant and Obscene

Reacting to the US$150 million cost of the 20 January 2009 inauguration of U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama, Reformed Presbyterian minister and Christian Defense Coalition President Pat Mahoney stated on 18 January 2009:

It is a slap in the face to America's struggling and poor for President-elect Obama to stage a $150 million celebration during the worst economic crisis in a generation…The obscene price tag for this Inauguration shatters the myth that this President is deeply concerned about the poor and broken…Sadly, this extravagant Inauguration reflects a life long lack of personal commitment by President-elect Obama to the poor and needy.”

Mahoney cited several examples of U.S. President Obama’s lack of personal commitment to the poor and needy including; that the Obama campaign raised nearly US$1 billion while millions of Americans were struggling through the current economic crisis; that Obama never personally visited Hurricanes Ike and Gustav victims while criticizing former U.S. President Bush for not being compassionate enough with Hurricane Katrina victims; that Obama's tax returns show that before becoming a millionaire Obama gave less than one percent of his income to charity, and afterwards less than five percent; and that Obama has not even helped family members with serious financial problems including an aunt that lives in a run-down housing project in Boston, Massachusetts and a Kenyan step-brother in deep poverty.

Mahoney concluded, “We pray that [professing Christian] Obama…will…follow the [teaching] of Jesus [that]…'when you have done it unto the least of these you did it unto me.'"

[5] Advisory on PCUSA Constitutional Amendments A-N Available

The Joint Renewal Team (JRT) of The Presbyterian Coalition has published a document, “
Commentary and Recommendations on Proposed Amendments and Ecumenical Statements Sent Down from the 218th General Assembly for Votes in the Presbyteries,” to assist Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) presbyteries to prepare for upcoming votes on the amendments.

The JRT made recommendations only in cases where they judged that the amendment would bring about a significant change. The JRT considers the most important amendment before the PCUSA this year to be Amendment B, which would weaken the existing “Fidelity and Chastity Amendment,” and recommends a "no" vote on that amendment.

[6] Christian Defense Coalition Gets Mixed 1st Amendment Messages from Presidential Inaugural Authorities

After being
issued a permit on 6 January 2009 by the U.S. Department of the Interior to conduct a pro-life vigil and display along the parade route during the Presidential Inauguration, the Christian Defense Coalition (CDC) on 7 January 2009 received a letter from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) denying their request to leave on 24 January 2009 a "sidewalk chalk" display with pro-life messages and artwork for President Obama on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.

Representing the CDC, the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) sent a demand letter to the MPD to lift a ban on pro-life displays in front of the White House by Monday, 12 January 2009, or they will file a federal lawsuit.

Reformed Presbyterian minister the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the CDC, states: "The foundation of this nation is that every American has the right to peacefully share their views, thoughts and opinions in the public square free from government interference and harassment. It should not matter what the particular content of those views might be…It is therefore most troubling that for the first time ever law enforcement is choosing to ban this practice when it involves a pro-life display taking place in front of the White House. Is this the future of free speech and political dissent under President Barack Obama?…”

[12] Florida Republican Party Won't Recognize Pastor as State Committeeman

Pastor Bryan Longworth in August 2008 was elected a State Committeeman for the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) with more than fifty-one percent of the vote in a three-person race.

On 12 June 2008, RPOF Chairman James Greer issued a memo in an attempt to add requirements to qualifying for election to party offices. His memo exceeded the requirements of both state statutes and RPOF rules, and exceeded his authority since both state statutes and the RPOF constitution require rule changes to be made by the full state committee. The RPOF credentialing committee used the June 12 memo as a binding rule and has notified Longworth that he is not qualified to serve as State Committeeman.

Pastor Longworth has appealed the RPOF Credentialing Committee's ruling, and may sue the RPOF if they persist in denying him the seat to which voters elected him. Longworth commented, “The Republican Party in St. Lucie County, and the State and Nation for that matter, is in a crisis situation. We need all the help it can get. Republicans need to welcome new committeemen and women with open arms. Instead, they're saying go home. You're not welcome here! Yet, to win elections, we need to fight for the values we hold dear rather than fighting against each other."

[14] Telegraph.co.uk Columnist Excoriates British Prime Minister and Church of Scotland “Son of the Manse” Gordon Brown

In a 6 January 2009 article “Morality is Making a Comeback, and That's Bad News for Gordon Brown,” Telegraph columnist Iain Martin excoriates British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for reflecting in his governance the influences of Brown’s growing up the son of a Church of Scotland (CoS) minister.

Martin characterizes Brown as “the embodiment of the [CoS] in which his father preached with Presbyterian distinction: sparing of too much of the God stuff, heavy on the communitarian emphasis on moral authority and interested in the interminable troubles of Africa.”

Martin says that this CoS influence bred in Brown a “…serious moral superiority complex…accentuated by the birth of Thatcherism and what [Brown] regarded as its wicked attack on all [Brown] cherished most: collectivism, hyperactive government, higher taxes and public spending.”

Martin says that Brown’s moral authority is being questioned from several directions. In December 2008,
the “…Bishop of Manchester accused [Brown’s] Labour party of being "beguiled by money" and "morally corrupt"”. Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams recently asked Brown “…whether it is wise to cure the country’s financial crisis produced by an excess of borrowing with ever more borrowing.”

Martin characterizes Tory party leader David Cameron as now “…outraged by the scale of the economic catastrophe engulfing Britain…, [the] origins [of which] are not only economic, they have a moral dimension too: reckless consumption…, a disregard for protecting the vulnerable in difficult times by the discouraging of saving and levels of debt, public and private, which were quite mad.”

[15] Church of Scotland Leaders Defend Appointment of Homosexual Minister to Aberdeen, Scotland’s Queen’s Cross Church

The Church of Scotland’s (CoS) Aberdeen Presbytery has voted by a 3/5 majority to appoint a homosexual minister, the Rev. Scott Rennie to the pulpit of Queen’s Cross Church in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Queen’s Cross Church congregation members who do not approve of the Rev. Rennie’s homosexual lifestyle are expected to lodge an appeal to block the move by 19 January 2009. The CoS General Assembly would then make the final decision.

Rennie is separated from his wife, with whom he has a young daughter. Rennie currently shares the manse at his present church, the Brechin [Scotland] Cathedral, with another man.

[16] Church of Scotland Warns of Minister Shortage in Moray, Scotland

Church of Scotland (CoS) council secretary for ministries in Scotland, the Rev. Martin Scott, in a 9 January 2009 interview, warned that the shortage of ministers in Moray, Scotland could reach a “critical stage” if it continues.

Scott said that one-third of the twenty-one CoS charges in Moray, Scotland are vacant, with one being five years without a permanent minister, and said that these vacancies put extra pressure on the existing ministers that are called to run up to five parishes at a time.

Scott added that rural churches were harder to fill because many ministers have partners who work and would find it difficult to find employment in a remote area.

[9] Answers Research Journal Editor Tells of Mockery, Derision, and Bogus Paper Submission from Darwinian Scientists

Approaching the one-year anniversary of Answers in Genesis’ peer-reviewed Answers Research Journal on 9 January 2009, editor Dr. Andrew Snelling looks back on the first year of publication as exceeding expectations both quantitatively and qualitatively, and looks optimistically ahead to 2009 due to fourteen papers being already submitted or promised before the new year began, and cautiously with “a new journal [having] to first demonstrate its credibility and acceptability in order to attract and encourage the best creationist researchers to submit their papers to it.”

Dr. Snelling additionally described the mockery, derision, and even the submission of a bogus paper—by Darwinian scientists that want their view of creation to be the only one allowed in the public square and to be taught in the schools. Snelling describes how a Darwinian scientist formerly affiliated with Queens University Belfast, using an assumed name, submitted a paper purporting to be based on legitimate scientific research, but in actuality was full of factual errors and what Snelling characterized as “not serious scientific research of the calibre of that in [the pseudonymed scientist’s list of prior] publications.”
