[1] Christians - Boycott Boy Scouts of America – Because Romans 1 Says Boy Scouts Hate God

“What if someone wouldn’t go to Heaven because of homosexual sin? Would you care? The Boy Scouts are considering a vote to turn against God [that] shows they no longer care for the souls of young men or [that they] fear God. Christians must boycott the Boy Scouts (1 Corinthians 6:9-10),” says Pastor Steven Andrew, president of USA Christian Ministries.

“There are Christian alternatives to the Boy Scouts, such as the Royal Rangers. To a parent your son’s soul is more important than anything else,” he continues. “Do you want your son to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and go to Heaven?”

“How can they talk about letting sin in the camp, when the Boy Scouts oath promises duty to God? They are hypocritical and confuse young men. Leviticus 22:18 says, ‘You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination,’” explains the pastor.

“The Boy Scouts disobeying God results from Barack Obama’s sinful homosexual priorities. God says those who oppose Him are ‘haters of God’ in Romans 1:30. He says to turn away from such people in 2 Timothy 3:5,” he continued.

The Boy Scouts and Barack Obama also overlook homosexual health concerns. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that one in five homosexuals have HIV, with many unaware they are sick. A study found that the average homosexual dies at 42 years of age and has a higher depression rate, Cameron reports.

The pastor says, “Americans are to follow the Lord, obeying the Holy Bible with all our hearts and souls. Jesus taught the most Christ-like and compassionate response to sinners. Jesus said, ‘Repent, and believe the Gospel.’”

“Obama and the Boy Scouts can follow Satan if they want to. However, Christians are to make disciples of Americans. Are you on the Lord’s side?” he asks.

[2] United Church of Christ Advocates Not Satisfied with Boy Scouts of America’s Proposed Acceptance of Homosexual Scouts but Not Leaders

LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) advocates in the United Church of Christ (UCC) have expressed their displeasure with the soon-to-be-voted-upon proposal by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to allow homosexual boys to become Boy Scouts, but not to allow homosexual men to be Boy Scout leaders.

The 2003 UCC General Synod officially called for the end of the BSA’s ban on homosexual scouts and leaders begun in 1978 and reaffirmed several times since then.

[3] Clearnote Church of Bloomington, Indiana Deacon Attacks Planned Parenthood Abortuary with Ax and Red Paint, Subsequently Admonished by Pastors and Elders

Benjamin D. Curell, 27, a deacon at Clearnote Church in Bloomington, Indiana, was arrested 11 April 2013 after attacking the property of the Planned Parenthood abortuary in Bloomington with an ax and with red paint.

Bloomington Police Captain Joe Qualters said:

“[Curell] made statements indicating the facility was targeted due to abortions being performed there. He stated his intent was to damage the building because they ‘kill’ and ‘murder’ babies. He attributed his actions to his religious beliefs. Extensive damage had been done to the building and office equipment with the ax. There was also red paint that had been splashed onto the building. Curell was taken into custody without incident.”

On 12 April 2013, the pastors and elders of Clearnote Church issued the following statement:

“Yesterday morning the pastors and elders of Clearnote Church learned that Ben Curell, a deacon of the church, had been arrested for vandalizing Planned Parenthood. No one in the church knew about his plans. We are convinced Ben’s actions were not justifiable civil disobedience. The elders and pastors have met with Ben and admonished him.

“Throughout history faithful Christians have confessed that from conception children bear the image of God. Therefore, we at Clearnote Church have encouraged and will continue to encourage Christians to peacefully and lawfully witness against the great evil of abortion.

“We have counseled Ben to repent and submit to the civil authority that God has placed over us for our good. This authority reflects and points to the judgment of God before Whom we all one day must give an account.”

The Clearnote Church website describes the church as Reformed and Evangelical, specifically proclaiming the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation.

[4] Calvin Theological Seminary Launches New Digital Research Center for Reformation Studies

Scholars and students have a new research center devoted to developing digital tools, resources, and scholarship focused on the religious reformations of the early modern era, particularly arising out of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. The Junius Institute for Digital Reformation Research of Calvin Theological Seminary is a natural fit for the seminary community, seminary president Julius Medenblik said. "We're pleased to see the ongoing efforts of faculty, students, and alumni of the seminary develop into a formal home for projects with exciting possibilities for coming to a better understanding the multi-faceted legacy of the Reformation," he said.

The institute is conceived as a forum to promote research into the Reformation and post-Reformation periods, covering the 16th to the 18th centuries, through the use of digital tools, skills, and resources. The Junius Institute will house the Post-Reformation Digital Library (PRDL), an electronic database covering thousands of authors and primary source documents on the development of theology and philosophy in these centuries. With the click of a few buttons, researchers can now download digital files with source material from hundreds of years ago. Before recent large-scale digitization efforts, like those undertaken by Google and many European libraries, access to these kinds of sources had been difficult, costly, or even impossible. In some cases sources were simply lost or unknown.

The PRDL began as a collaborative project to gather a list of digital sources by doctoral students in historical theology in 2008. "It quickly became apparent that there was a great need for a tool to collect and organize the wide array of digital sources available from digitization projects all over the world," said Todd M. Rester, director of the Junius Institute. A year later the first version of the PRDL website was launched in partnership with the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies at Calvin College and Seminary. After launching an expanded and upgraded website in 2011 the group behind the PRDL began to focus on realizing a stable institutional environment for creating and catalyzing similar projects.

"We are investigating ways of applying what we've learned and gathered in the process of producing the PRDL to create different ways of disseminating and displaying research," said David S. Sytsma, who serves as research curator of the Junius Institute. He emphasized the need to continue to expand and develop tools like the PRDL as well as to seek out new projects, including digitization of sources, pursuing collaborative partnerships with libraries and research centers, implementing crowdsourcing strategies, and using mapping and GPS technologies to illustrate the dynamic networks of communication and exchange in the early modern period.

"The PRDL began as a labor of love by a group of like-minded researchers," Rester said, "but we soon found that the scale of the project and the possibilities for other tools demanded some significant investment of time and resources." The Junius Institute provides a framework for keeping a project like the PRDL up-to-date as well as for connecting the seminary community more closely with broader scholarly trends. Richard A. Muller, the P.J. Zondervan professor of historical theology at CTS, explains: "Academic research has been revolutionized by the recent progress of digital tools and methods. We see this in a variety of fields, from science and medicine to art and literature. The Junius Institute and projects like PRDL represent the latest developments in the realms of intellectual history and the theology of the early modern period."

[5] New Online Degree Program Opportunities from Reformed Theological Seminary

Until recently, Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) offered one online degree, the Master of Arts (Religion). Now RTS will offer three, fully online-degrees: the Master of Arts (Biblical Studies), the Master of Arts (Theological Studies), and the Master of Arts (Religion). In addition, RTS will now offer a significant percentage of the Master of Divinity degree online. M.Div. students can now take up to sixty-seven percent of their courses via distance education.

RTS is committed to residential theological education. However, as our world continues to grow and change, RTS is also committed to providing alternative educational models. These more flexible options allow students with work and travel restrictions to experience Reformed graduate theological education. These changes will take place on June 1, 2013.

RTS is responding to the needs of non-residential students worldwide by making some significant changes to its Virtual campus and its operations. The Virtual campus will now become two groups -- RTS Global Education (US and International) and RTS Distance Education department. Dr. Andy Peterson, current president of RTS Virtual, will now head up RTS Global which will offer the MABS, MATS, and MAR degree programs to non-residential students. RTS Global President Andy Peterson (pictured above) said, "We pray that these new theological degrees and the increased use of distance learning and local mentoring will be important for the advancement of the global Kingdom. And we are looking for new strategic relationships with churches and Christian schools around the world."

The new RTS Distance Education department will be headed by Executive Director David John, who has been director of media for RTS Virtual. The Distance Education department will serve both residential and non-residential students taking online courses as part of their degree program.

More information will be forthcoming about these exciting changes.

[1] Pastor Arrested -- Free Speech Violated by Jackson, Mississippi Police

A Pastor preaching on the public sidewalk at the corner in front of All Women's Health on the afternoon of 17 April 2013 was arrested by Jackson Police while he was preaching. The preacher, Chet Gallagher from Las Vegas, Nevada, was called over by police in the middle of his preaching. He asked that they come to him unless he was under arrest and at that time they said he was under arrest. When asked what the charges were the police refused to answer. Other pastors are now trying to discover why he was arrested and cannot even locate where police have taken him.

The Operation Save America, States of Refuge Campaign has been in Jackson hoping that the will of the people of Mississippi will prevail and Mississippi will become the first abortion-free state in America. The local churches of Jackson have joined OSA in having church on the sidewalk near the killing place. It is amazing that this happened on April 17, the day before the Mississippi Health Department was originally scheduled to close down this illegal clinic for violation of Mississippi Law. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel P. Jordan extended an injunction he issued several months ago to block the State of Mississippi from shutting down forever this dangerous clinic.

"When the Church of Jesus Christ comes out of her walls to join us in defending the innocent, oppression increases" said the Rev. Flip Benham of Operation Save America. This is a hate crime -- hatred of God, His word and His law.

"…all who hate me love death." Proverbs 8:36.

The people of Mississippi elected a governor and a legislature determined to free their state of the blood of the innocent but the renegade courts and Jackson police are determined to counter their wishes.

[2] Geneva College Welcomes New Chaplain

Geneva College is pleased to announce Rutledge (Rut) E. Etheridge III as Chaplain, a position that provides for the spiritual needs of the college community. In this role, Etheridge will assist students, faculty and staff in understanding events as they relate to spiritual and emotional well-being, oversee Geneva’s chapel program, and collaborate with the college’s church relations program and Center for Faith and Practice (CFP).

“Having a chaplain is an important part of maintaining a spiritually healthy campus,” notes Geneva President Dr. Kenneth A. Smith. “Rut will be an asset in continuing the strong integration of academics and faith for which Geneva is renowned, as well as an encouragement to the college community in all areas of spiritual development.”

As Chaplain, Etheridge will also teach part-time in the Department of Bible, Christian Ministries and Philosophy, a duty for which he is well qualified. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Systematic Theology at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (RPTS) in Pittsburgh since 2007 and is a former Bible teacher at Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis.

In addition, Etheridge possesses pastoral experience, having served at Pittsburgh’s Providence Reformed Presbyterian Church since 2006. He speaks regularly to many groups and at colleges and conferences, and has been a chapel speaker and guest lecturer at Geneva. Etheridge has spoken at the annual Westminster Confession of Faith Into the 21st Century Conference and the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Churches Reformation Day, and has also been interviewed frequently on Bibleburgh, a radio talk show on 101.5 WORD FM.

Etheridge earned a Master of Divinity at RPTS and a Bachelor of Arts in Comprehensive Bible, with an emphasis on pastoral studies and a minor in the philosophy of religion, at Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.

“The best of me is my wife Evelyn and our four children—Isaiah, Caroline, Calvin, and Josiah. We are tremendously excited about becoming part of the Geneva family,” says Etheridge. “I so look forward to ministering the living Christ in this new capacity and would greatly appreciate your prayers during this time of transition.”

Dr. Dean Smith, chair of the Department of Biblical Studies and Philosophy, has encouraged the college to pursue the Chaplain position. In the pursuit of filling this role, Dean Smith has offered to relinquish his role as Chapel Coordinator.

“We are extremely grateful to Dean for his labors on behalf of the college these past few years,” says President Smith.

[5] Dr. Chad Van Dixhoorn to Join Reformed Theological Seminary - Washington DC Residential Faculty

Dr. Scott Redd, president of Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington D.C., is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Chad B. Van Dixhoorn as associate professor of church history.

"Chad brings an impressive mix of academic excellence in the area of church history and experience with faithful pastoral ministry," Redd commented. "His addition to our residential faculty will greatly augment RTS/Washington's work of equipping ministers and Christian leaders in the Washington metropolitan area."

Dr. Chad Van Dixhoorn was trained at Westminster Theological Seminary (M.Div., Th.M.) and the University of Cambridge (Ph.D.). He is a distinguished scholar and author, having recently published The Minutes and Papers of the Westminster Assembly, 1643-1652, a five-volume work with Oxford University Press (2012).

He has taught Church History and Practical Theology at RTS/Washington since 2008, part of that time as an adjunct faculty member. Van Dixhoorn describes himself as "an incorrigibly confessional Presbyterian," and he has a reputation for filling his classes with wisdom and humor.

Having served as associate pastor of Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Vienna, Virginia, since 2008, he will continue his pastoral duties there while teaching at the seminary. He and his wife Emily have five children.
