25 December 2013

“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” [Ezekiel 33:6]

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Ephesians 6:12]

Judge Rules Geneva College Does Not Have to Provide Coverage for Contraception

A 23 December 2013
Pittsburgh Post Gazette article by Rich Lord titled “Judge Rules Geneva College Does Not Have to Provide Coverage for Contraception” reports that U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti ruled 23 December 2013 that Geneva College of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania does not have to provide employees with insurance coverage for contraception, abortion-inducing drugs and other "preventive services" because if the institution has to comply with the Affordable Care Act's rules’ contraception mandate, it will be compelled to violate its founding tenets.

The judge ruled that if a temporary injunction was not granted, that
Geneva College would be “forced to choose between: (a) violating its religious convictions by acquiescing to a government requirement that it facilitate access to abortion-inducing drugs and devices; and (b) violating its religious convictions by cancelling all health care coverage for its employees."

In June 2013, the judge granted a preliminary injunction so that
Geneva College isn’t forced to provide contraception coverage to its students.

As the injunctions are preliminary, the case will continue in the same court, and the court’s eventual decision will likely be appealed to the
3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

[5] 25th Anniversary of the Lockerbie, Scotland Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey Held 21 December 2013

A 20 December 2013 The Courier article titled “Services to Mark 25th Anniversary of Lockerbie Bombing” reports that the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt. Rev. Lorna Hood, took part in the 21 December 2013 memorial service at Westminster Abbey for the 25th anniversary of the Muslim terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in which 243 passengers, sixteen crew and eleven on the ground were murdered.

Ms. Hood commented:

"It is difficult to believe that twenty-five years have passed since that awful night when so many innocent lives were lost and a town in Scotland would be forever associated with one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history.

"I remember so clearly the devastation of the town and the grief and sorrow of relatives who journeyed across the Atlantic to see the spot where their loved ones died.

"For weeks after, rescue workers, police, members of the forces and civilians worked tirelessly to recover as much evidence as possible from the wreckage and, to this day, live with difficult memories of that time.

"I know that for many there are unanswered questions and a continuing search for truth, but this is a time to remember the 270 innocent lives cut short and the families here in Scotland and the U.S.A. living with that loss."

Forum 18 News Service reported 18 December 2013 that in September or October 2013, two Presbyterian women, Rovza and Marina Sultanova, and six others were arrested for teaching children in a private home. The two women were each fined ninety times the minimum monthly wage, with the other six given lower fines. The police also confiscated Christian materials, which a judge ordered be destroyed.

[7] Houston Grand Jury Won't Indict Abortionist for Twisting Heads off Babies

A Houston grand jury has refused to indict late-term abortionist Douglas Karpen after a months-long investigation into allegations of illegal late-term abortions and the killing of babies born alive at his two abortion clinics.

"The refusal to indict Karpen is a gross miscarriage of justice. The grand jury has essentially freed Karpen to continue to violate Texas laws and take the lives of late-term babies that the law was meant to protect," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "It's upsetting to know that the kind of brutality shown in the photos taken at his clinic will be allowed continue."

Operation Rescue alleged that Karpen was murdering babies in in a similar way as convicted Pennsylvania abortion Kermit Gosnell, who was found guilty of three counts of First Degree murder for intentionally killing babies born alive during late-term abortions.

The allegations against Karpen were based on information acquired from four former Karpen employees and on photographs of dead late-term babies taken by some of the workers on their cell phones. The grisly photos showed very large aborted babies that were nearly decapitated.

The informants also told Operation Rescue that Karpen routinely did abortions beyond the legal limit of 24 weeks, which seemed to be supported by the photographs.

"It's simply unbelievable that a grand jury would not find that Karpen broke the law, just based on the photographic evidence alone," said Newman. "There's no way any reasonable person could look at the images of those abortion victims and say that nothing was done wrong. The babies' throats were cut from ear to ear. That isn't something that can be done inside the womb."

Newman continued, "We are not giving up on the Karpen matter. We will continue to seek ways through the legal system to bring him to justice. This isn't the last anyone will hear of this."

[1] Iowa Attorney General Files Application for Further Review of Iowa Appeals Court Decision Overturning Sexual Misconduct Convictions of Former URCNA Pastor Patrick Edouard

An 11 December 2013 Journal Express article titled “State Files Application for Further Review” reports that the Iowa Attorney General's Office on 10 December 2013 filed an application for further review with the Iowa Supreme Court regarding the Iowa Court of Appeals’ recent decision to nullify several sexual misconduct convictions against former pastor Patrick Edouard.

Edouard was the pastor of Covenant Reformed Church (
United Reformed Churches in North America (URCNA)) in Pella, Iowa. He had been convicted of three counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist, and one count of entering into a pattern/scheme of exploitation by a therapist.

The Iowa Court of Appeals overturned the verdicts saying that the jury instructions were not provided regarding what was and was not a “counselor” as defined by the applicable statutes, and that Edouard was denied the testimony of an expert witness who should have been allowed to testify.

The state’s application for further review can be seen here:

[4] Archbishop Desmund Tutu Laments Exclusion of Dutch Reformed Church and Afrikaners from Nelson Mandela's Memorial Funeral Services

IAfrica.com reported 17 December 2013 that Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu stated that the Dutch Reformed Church should have been part of the interfaith ceremony at Nelson Mandela's memorial funeral services.

The retired archbishop apologized to the Afrikaner community, saying that Mandela had strived to ensure that the Afrikaners continued to feel that they are a part of South Africa.

Tutu commended the organizers of the memorial activities for Mandela, but said that the organizers should not have been limited to members of the African national Congress.

Bay Psalm Book Auctioned at Sotheby’s for US$14.5 Million

Sotheby’s auction house in Manhattan on 3 December 2013 auctioned one of eleven known surviving copies of the Bay Psalm Book for US$14.5 million. The book had been placed on auction by the Old South Church (United Church of Christ) in Boston, Massachusetts.

The purchaser, David Rubenstein, plans to lend the psalter to various libraries around the
U.S., and eventually to place the book on long-term loan to one of the libraries.

Presbyterian Center Chapel Hosts Interfaith Celebration

The Presbyterian Center (Presbyterian Church (PCUSA)) chapel in Louisville, Kentucky on 2 October 2013, purposely on the same day as Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, held an interfaith celebration to honor the world’s peacemakers.

Celebrants included Anne Walter from the First Nations tradition; Johny Alse, who represented the Hindu Temple of Kentucky; Geshe Kalsang Rapgyal, who represented the local Tibetan Buddhist center, Drepung Gomang Institute; Harem Mamasreh, a Palestinian Muslim graduate student from the University of Louisville; and Cantor David Lipp from Adath Jeshurun Synagogue.

Princeton Theological Seminary Lays Off Twenty-One Employees

Princeton Theological Seminary laid off twenty-one employees the week of 18 November 2013. The seminary attributed the layoffs to carrying out the goals of the school’s strategic plan developed in 2012.

Sources at the school said most of the layoffs were in the areas of information technology, library staff, and continuing education. Some of the employees who lost their jobs were reportedly escorted off campus after being told their positions no longer existed.
