“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” [Ezekiel 33:6]

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Ephesians 6:12]

Humanist Weddings Overtake Church of Scotland Weddings for the First Time

A 17 August 2016
Press and Journal article by Joe Churcher titled “Humanist Weddings Overtake Kirk Ceremonies for the First Time” reports that the number of Church of Scotland has fallen in half since 2005, and that
in 2015 for the first time, there were more humanist weddings in Scotland than Kirk weddings.

Church of Scotland Mission and Discipleship Council convener the Rev. Norman Smith commented:

“The Church of Scotland has always stood with the people of Scotland and helped them take this step together.

“That is still the case and we would encourage anyone considering marriage to remember their local church when thinking about their very special day.”

Church of Scotland and Scotland’s Jewish Community to Hold Talks Aimed at Repairing Rift over 2013 Kirk Report Saying Scripture Provides No Basis for Jewish Claims to Israel

A 4 August 2016 Israel National News article titled “Church of Scotland, Jewish Community to ‘Repair’ Relations” reports that a group of ten people from the Church of Scotland (CoS) and Scotland’s Jewish community plan to meet to “repair the damage” caused by a 2013 report saying there is no scriptural basis for Jewish claims to Israel. The report additionally recommended that the CoS boycott Israel.

CoS minister and convener of the CoS Church and Society Council the Rev. Richard Frazer stated:

“Alongside others from the Church of Scotland, I am looking forward to embarking upon this important piece of work together from our colleagues from within the Jewish community. We hold a great deal in common as people whose shared faith is rooted in the story of Abraham. That faith inspires us to work together for a better world as well as striving for a deeper understanding and greater mutual respect for one another.”

ABC-CLIO Publishes “Religion and Politics in America: An Encyclopedia of Church and State in American Life” by Frank J. Smith, Editor

ABC-CLIO has published “
Religion and Politics in America: An Encyclopedia of Church and State in American Life” by Frank J. Smith, Editor, in two-volume, 899 pages covering the topics of Religion/Politics, Politics, Law, and Government/History.

There has always been an intricate relationship between religion and politics. This encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of the interrelation of religion and politics from colonial days to the present.

Can a judge display the Ten Commandments outside of the courthouse? Can a town set up a nativity scene on the village green during Christmas? Should U.S. currency bear the "In God We Trust" motto? Should public school students be allowed to form bible study groups? Controversies about the separation of church and state, the proper use of religious imagery in public space, and the role of religious beliefs in public education are constantly debated. This work offers insights into contemporary controversies regarding the uneasy intersections of religion and politics in America.

Organized alphabetically, the entries place each topic in its proper historical context to help readers fully grasp how religious beliefs have always existed side by side—and often clashed with—political ideals in the United States from the time of the colonies. The information is presented in an unbiased manner that favors no particular religious background or political inclination. This work shows that politics and religion have always had an impact on one another and have done so in many ways that will likely surprise modern students.

Features

-- Enables readers to understand why religion and politics are necessarily interrelated

-- Demonstrates how today's heated controversies about the delicate balance between religious beliefs and government policies in America are not new but have existed since the foundation of the nation

-- Represents an ideal resource for students writing position papers regarding the separation of church and state (or lack of)
