[1] Joni Eareckson Tada Undergoes Successful Cancer Surgery

Joni Eareckson Tada, founder of Joni and Friends International Disability Center in Agoura Hills, California, on 21 June 2010 underwent successful surgery for stage two breast cancer, which had affected some of her lymph nodes. Mrs. Tada will undergo chemotherapy as followup treatment to the surgery.

Dr. Geoffrey Drew, Mrs. Tada’s family doctor, said that the cancer is “…a highly survivable cancer and we anticipate a positive prognosis…”

The thoughts and prayers of the Christian Observer go out to Mrs. Tada, her husband Ken Tada, and to their ministry colleagues and countless friends all over the world.

[2] Efforts Continue between Erskine and the ARP General Synod to Settle Court Case

A 26 June 2010 article by Ron Barnett in The Greenville News titled “Erskine, Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church Strike Deal on Lawsuit” reports that negotiations between lawyers for the trustees and alumni association, and the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARP) General Synod (GS) are continuing with the goal of dropping all court actions and returning the college and its relationship to the ARPGS to the status quo prior to the special called meeting of the ARPGS in March 2010.

[3] Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary President Ergun Caner Loses Administrative Role for Making “Factual Statements that are Self-Contradictory”

A 25 June 2010 article by Ray Reed in The News and Advance titled “LU Won’t Renew Caner’s Contract as Dean of Seminary” reports that Liberty University will not renew the contract of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary President Ergun Caner as dean of the seminary. Caner though, has signed a contract to be a member of the seminary’s faculty for the 2010-2011 school year. Caner’s loss of the seminary administrative position is due to the findings of a four-member investigatory committee of the Liberty University Board of Trustees that “Dr. Caner has made factual statements that are self-contradictory,” regarding his background as a Muslim convert to Christianity.

A 26 June 2010 article by Mirelle on the Talk Islam: A Crescent Waxing Islam blog cited The News and Advance article, and commented:

“I think “self-contradictory” is Evangelical-speak for “being caught lying over and over and over again about where he was born, why he came to this country and that he never was a member of some outfit called ‘Islamic Youth Jihad,’ among other things.”

““Self-contradictory” also means that he gets to keep his job as professor at LU. The lesson the rest of us take away from this is that lying can be profitable, even when you’re caught making egregious whoppers on multiple occasions over many years.”

In the “Resistance is futile, you will be Googled” department, an interesting juxtaposition of a Liberty University Google advertisement was present in the header and elsewhere in the body of the subject Talk Islam article:

[4] Church of Scotland One of Many Voices against Assisted Suicide Bill before Scottish Parliament

A 23 June 2010 article on The Christian Institute website titled “Fresh Blow to Scottish Assisted Suicide Bill” reports that eighty-six percent of the 601 individuals and organizations consulted about the Assisted Suicide Bill before the Scottish Parliament are opposed to its intent to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill and permanently physically incapacitated people.

One of the consulted groups was the Church of Scotland, which cautioned that the bill if passed would allow assisted suicide for sixteen-year-olds, and that sixteen-year-olds that are too young to drink alcohol and drive vehicles are not emotionally mature enough to make decisions to kill themselves.

[5] Planned Parenthood has US$1.3 Billion Discrepancy out of US$2 Billion in Federal Funds Received 2002-2008

A 29 June 2010 article by Nathan Burchfiel of the Culture and Media Institute (CMI) titled “Media Ignore Planned Parenthood's $1.3 Billion Federal Funding Discrepancy” cites an American Life League study of Planned Parenthood (PP)’s 2002-2008 annual reports showing that PP received US$2 billion in federal grants and contracts during the seven year period. A 16June 2010 Government Accountability Report shows that PP spent only US$657.1 million of the federal funds in the same time period.

Burchfiel points out that none of the three major U.S. television networks, nor any of the major U.S. newspapers have reported anything about the undocumented US$1.343 billion, or sixty-seven percent of the federal funds received by PP between 2002 and 2008.

[6] Native American Speaker at Uniting General Council Calls for Truth and Reconciliation Commission to Overcome “Cowboy Theology”

A 22 June 2010 news release by Jerry Van Marter of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) titled “Speaker Calls for Truth and Reconciliation Commission” reports that Native American leader and member of the Lakota/Sioux tribe Richard Twiss on 22 June 2010 at the Uniting General Council of the WCRC called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation-like commission to "seek ways to make restitution to tribal people" for the churches' complicity in "co-opting the Bible as a tool of colonialism and imperialism" in North America over the last 400 years.

Twiss said such a commission -- comprised of indigenous people from North America and the global South -- is necessary to overcome "cowboy theology," which he said has perpetuated "a distinct evangelical bias against Native and indigenous culture and ways."

Twiss praised the emerging missiological model called "missio Dei" ("mission of God"), that "points to the radical communal nature of God" rather than focusing on the institutional nature of the church. "God's very nature is missionary. It is not primarily about the propagation or transmission of intellectual convictions, doctrines, moral commands," he said, "but rather about the inclusion of all creation in God's overflowing, superabundant life of communion."

[9] World Evangelical Alliance Issues Statement on Crisis in Afghanistan for Christians and other Non-Muslims

The Religious Liberty Commission (RLC) of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) issued a statement on 24 June 2010 expressing concern over the recent developments in Afghanistan, calling for the death of converts from Islam to other religions. The anti-Christian reaction followed the airing of a controversial television documentary on 27 May 2010, on ‘Afghan Christian Converts’ by a local television station in Afghanistan, wherein they revealed the identities of a some supposed Afghan Christian converts.

The WEA RLC additionally expressed concern about the statements made by Afghanistan officials including the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan H.E. Hamid Karzai. It is reported that the Karzai has instructed government officials and the Afghan intelligence agency to take immediate and serious action to prevent further conversions from Islam.

The WEA RLC calls on the worldwide church to pray for Afghanistan that there will be respect for the freedom of religion and that the government of Afghanistan will take a all necessary action to safeguard the lives and the rights of all Afghans and expatriates working in Afghanistan.

[10] U.S. Department of Homeland Security Trying to Deport Muslim Convert to Christianity that Saved Countless Lives Working as an Agent for Israel

A 27 June 2010 interview by Dan Wooding of ASSIST News Service of Ron Brackin, co-author of the best-seller Son of Hamas, reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is trying to deport Mosab Hassan Yousef, eldest son of Hamas founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, convert to Christianity, and for ten years an agent of the Israeli equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

DHS senior attorney Kerri Calcador branded Yousef as a dangerous terrorist by citing a story in Yousef’s book Son of Hamas where Yousef drove five suspects in a 2001 suicide bombing to a safe house. Calcador conveniently leaves out the fact that Yousef was working on an undercover mission for Israel at the time, and Yousef’s chauffeuring duties were part of that mission.

Brakin commented: “Out of 251 pages in which a slew of edgy undercover missions are described in detail, all DHS could come up with as evidence of terrorist activities is that he gave five guys a ride home from prison. And the attorney didn’t even notice that the ride and lots more all took place while he was serving Israeli intelligence and fighting terrorism. Using this kind of logic, I guess James Bond, Ethan Hunt, and Jason Bourne are terrorists too.”

Brakin said that at a recent Capitol Hill dinner to honor Mosab and several others, former Central Intelligence Agency director James Woolsey said of Mosab’s possible deportation: “My view is that the decision to deny him political refugee status was incredibly idiotic. It’s hard to think of a worse immigration decision in history. It’s fundamentally nuts.”

On a recent radio broadcast, WAVA-FM afternoon drive-time talk show host Don Kroah speculated that the administration of U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama wants Mosab to be deported because of the best-selling author’s continuous publication of the realities of Islam, which contradict official White House positions.

Group of Muslims Cheer and Shout “Allahu Akbar” as Dearborn, Michigan, Police Arrest Four Christians for Evangelizing Muslims at Arab International Festival after Federal Appeals Court Ruling against Dearborn Censorship (Extended Article)

An 18 June 2010 ASSIST News article by Mark Ellis titled “Three Christians Arrested in Outreach to Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan,” reports that after the city of Dearborn, Michigan, in 2010 banned the distribution of Christian literature in the vicinity of the city’s yearly Arab International Festival, a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit granted an emergency motion on behalf of Pastor George Saieg, allowing him to distribute literature and talk about his faith to Muslims at the festival.

On 18 June 2010, while proclaiming their faith in Christ to some of the hundreds of thousands of festival attendees, Dr. Nabeel Qureshi, co-director of Acts 17 Apologetics Ministries, along with David Woods and Paul Rezkalla, were arrested on breach of peace charges by Dearborn city police.

A Canadian attending the festival said that a crowd of fifteen to twenty Muslims watching the exchange between the evangelists and other Muslims cheered and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “Allah is the greatest”) as the police arrested the three evangelists. The Canadian commented: “I never thought I would see this in America.”

A 22 June 2010 ASSIST News Service article by Dan Wooding titled “Thomas More Law Center Represents Four Christian Missionaries Arrested at Arab Festival in Dearborn” reports that the arrests at the festival are being dubbed “police enforcement of Sharia law,” and that a fourth person, Negeen Mayel, was arrested on the same charge and an additional charge of failure to obey a police officer’s orders while, from 100 feet away, filming the discussions and subsequent arrests.

The four arrested are being represented by the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC), whose President and Chief Counsel Richard Thompson commented:

“These Christian missionaries were exercising their Constitutional rights to free speech and the free exercise of religion, but apparently the Constitution carries little weight in Dearborn, where the Muslim population seems to dominate the political apparatus.

“It’s apparent that these arrests were a retaliatory action over the embarrassing video of the strong arm tactics used last year by Festival Security Guards. This time, the first thing police officers did before making the arrests was to confiscate the video cameras in order to prevent a recording of what was actually happening.

“Contrary to the comments made by Police Chief Ron Haddad, our Constitution does not allow police to ban the right of free speech just because there are some hecklers. Not all police officers approve of the way their department treated these Christians.”

A TMLC lawyer on 21 June 2010 faxed a letter to Chief Haddad demanding that the three video cameras and tapes illegally seized from the missionaries be immediately returned.

[2] Acting Mayor of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Touts Use of “Decoy Jews” to Trap Moroccan Youth Committing Anti-Semitic Acts

A 22 June 2010 Religion News Blog article titled “Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Wants to Use ‘Decoy Jews’ to Combat Anti-Semitism” reports that the acting mayor of Amsterdam, Netherlands, is considering the use of “decoy Jews” in order to catch the mostly-Moroccan youths who commit such anti-Semitic acts as giving the Nazi salute to the Jews that they encounter. Additionally under consideration is the use of “decoy homosexuals” to catch the mostly-Moroccan youths who commit acts of “intolerance and violence” toward homosexuals and Jews.

[3] U.S. Senate Bill Gives Federal Government Power to Shut Down the Internet in Response to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Directive

A 17 June 2010 Vision to America article titled “New Bill Gives Obama ‘Kill Switch’ To Shut Down The Internet” reports that a bill being championed by U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut would give “absolute power” to the U.S. Government to shut down the Internet in response to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security directive, thus giving emergency powers to the U.S. Government which could be used to silence free speech under the pretext of a national emergency.

[4] Documentary about Bela Biszku, Hungarian Communist Interior Minister who Facilitated Retributions after Failed 1956 Revolution, Screened in Budapest

A 17 June 2010 article on the Politics.hu website titled “Documentary on '56 Retributions Minister Screened” reports that a documentary titled “Crime Without Punishment,” about Bela Biszku, the Hungarian Communist interior minister who facilitated retributions against revolutionaries after the failed October 1956 revolution, was screened in a Budapest, Hungary, restaurant 16 June 2010 after objections by Biszku’s daughters were withdrawn.

In the documentary, Bela Biszku characterizes the 1956 uprising as a “counter-revolution,” says he has no regret or remorse for the death penalties pronounced during the post-1956 retaliations, argued that it was the judges rather than him who had passed the sentences, denied that he had intervened in the criminal procedures as a minister, and stated that Imre Nagy, Hungary’s prime minister in 1956 who was sentenced to death two years later, "deserved his fate".

The only published comment on the Politics.hu article as of 22 June 2010 described Biskzu as “a filthy murderer” and said that Biszku’s daughters “enjoyed a life of luxury from the heinous crimes of their monster father.”

[8] Uniting General Council 2010 Meeting 18-28 June 2010 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Merge World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Reformed Ecumenical Council

The Uniting General Council 2010 began its eleven day meeting on 18 June 2010 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to merge the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Reformed Ecumenical Council into one body called the World Communion of Reformed Churches -- a worldwide affiliation of 80 million Christians from 108 countries coming together as one body in Christ.

Attending the council meeting is Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), who expressed the desire to see the same level of cooperation between the WCC and the merged group as has existed between the WCC and the two groups that are merging.

Tveit commented: “We now see a more visible unity of Christ in the spirit of fellowship,” and said that though the merger is bringing more people together around the table, “Unfortunately, we don’t all yet share the Eucharist, but we do live out of the same baptism.”

[9] Acton Institute Acquires Christian's Library Press, Publishes New Book: 'Ecumenical Babel'

The Acton Institute (AI) has acquired the imprint of the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based book publisher Christian's Library Press (CLP). Since 1979, CLP has published influential texts on Christian leadership, stewardship, and theology, and will continue to pursue an active publishing schedule under the administration of the AI.

The first CLP book published under AI's oversight is Ecumenical Babel: Confusing Economic Ideology and the Church's Social Witness, by Jordan J. Ballor, which is a critical engagement of the ecumenical movement’s approach to ethical and economic issues, Ecumenical Babel updates a line of criticism articulated by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Paul Ramsey, and Ernest W. Lefever. Arguing for the continuing importance of Christian ecumenism, Jordan J. Ballor seeks to correct the errors created by the imposition of economic ideology onto the social witness of ecumenical Christianity as represented by the Lutheran World Federation, the newly formed World Communion of Reformed Churches, and the World Council of Churches. Ecumenical Babel is a voice for sustained ecumenical dialogue, vital ecclesiastical witness, and individual Christian conscience.

[10] Lancaster Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, New York, to Pay US$550,000 to Retain Church Property after Leaving PCUSA for EPC

A 20 June 2010 article by Jay Tokasz in The Buffalo News titled “Lancaster Congregation will Pay $550,000 after Break from Presbyterian Church” reports that the Lancaster Presbyterian Church (LPC) of Lancaster, New York, will pay US$550,000 to the Presbytery of Western New York (PWNY) of the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in order to retain their church property after the congregation in 2008 voted unanimously to leave the PCUSA for the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) after years of disagreement over social issues and biblical interpretation, then sued to maintain ownership of their church property.

LPC unsuccessfully argued that the church’s incorporation in 1828 nullified the 1981 PCUSA Book of Order change that says local congregations hold their property “in trust” for the benefit of the PCUSA and must turn the property over if leaving the PCUSA. The New York Court of Appeals declined to hear an appeal of the case.

The LPC must raise US$175,000 and take out a mortgage for the remaining US$375,000 by 18 August 2010 in order to pay off the PWNY. The PWNY determined the US$550,000 payoff amount by adding together their legal fees, LPC’s unpaid per capita dues for the past ten years or so, and ten percent of the church property value, which was recently appraised at US$875,000.

In another related development, the ARP General Synod approved US$531,000 for the 2010 budget request for Erskine College and Theological Seminary. The Erskine BoT had requested US$575,000.

Erskine Theological Seminary, the seminary of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, has and is matriculating Jewish, Mormon, and Islamic clerics into the DMin program. This means that Erskine Theological Seminary is now advancing the professional careers of non-Christian religious clerics.”

[4] Reformed Presbyterian Pastor and Pro-Life Activist Arrested for Praying on Public Sidewalk in Front of Washington DC Planned Parenthood Facility

Reformed Presbyterian Minister, pro-life activist, and director of the Christian Defense Coalition (CDC) the Rev. Pat Mahoney was arrested by Washington DC police on 8 June 2010 for unlawful entry, for praying on a public sidewalk that recently had been fenced in by Planned Parenthood and posted with “No Trespassing” signs.

The CDC says that it is now more important for government and law enforcement officials to protect abortion in our nation's capital then it is for them to protect the First Amendment, free speech, and civil liberties, and asks rhetorically: “Is this the future of America?”

[10] Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland Condemns Visit to Scotland of Roman Pontiff

A 10 June 2010 article by John Ross in The Scotsman titled “Pope's Scots Visit Condemned as 'Offensive'” reports that the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland (FPCS), in a statement arising out of the official protest lodged at the 2010 FPCS Synod meeting, has characterized the state visit status given to the upcoming tour of Great Britain by the Roman pontiff Pope Benedict XVI as “particularly offensive” because it gives “…that recognition and pretended legitimacy which [the Roman Pope] claims in opposition to the principles of the Reformation."

The statement continues: "We deny that [the Pope] is the head of the Christian Church or that he has any civil power which should receive recognition by any State, particularly one which has renounced his pretended jurisdiction."

The FPCS describes the Papacy as "deceitful and unrighteous," in light of the recent global exposure of child abuse by Roman Catholic clergy, and suggests that the Pope has connived in a cover-up of the widespread sexual abuse of minors by Roman Catholic clergy.

The FPCS concludes: "We find it particularly offensive that this visit will commence in Edinburgh [Scotland] where, 450 years ago, under the brave and godly leadership of John Knox and our other Reformers, the jurisdiction of the pope was forever abolished."

[11] Boys Brigade Now Welcomes All Faiths, and Atheists

A 14 June 2010 article by Kevin O’Sullivan in the Daily Express reports that due to declining membership, the Boys’ Brigade(BB) has opened its membership to all faiths, and to atheists.

BB was established in 1883 in Glasgow, Scotland, by the Church of Scotland to promote “reverence, discipline, obedience, and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.”

BB Scottish Organizer Bill Stevenson commented:

“There is a perception that the Boys’ Brigade is only a Church of Scotland thing but that is not the case. We have recently appointed a couple of development officers and part of their job will be to make contact with other denominations and faiths.

“We already have quite a few Catholic members as well as boys from non-Christian backgrounds. There has also been quite a few instances of parents from a range of ethnic backgrounds who are keen for their sons to be part of the organisation and to learn more about Scotland’s Christian heritage.”
