Mr. Wagner previously served as Asst. Minister at the Free North Church (FCS) in Inverness, Scotland.

[3] PCUSA Synod of Southern California Disses and Dismisses Santa Barbara Presbytery’s Plans to Re-Form as a PCUSA-ECO Presbytery

A 15 November 2012 Layman Online article by Paula R. Kincaid titled “Synod Court Declares Plans for Union Presbytery ‘Null and Void’” reports that in a 10 November 2012 decision, the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii’s Permanent Judicial Commission sustained eighteen of the nineteen counts made against the Santa Barbara Presbytery by the session of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara, California, and twenty-eight other ministers in the presbytery, thus nullifying the presbytery’s 2 June 2012 vote of 104-38 to affiliate both with the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO)’s Presbytery of the West as a union presbytery, and the presbytery’s 106-36 vote to recognize ECO as a Reformed body.

The Synod dismissed the legitimacy of the ECO as an equal council to the parallel PCUSA entities, dismissing the ECO as being just a “special interest group”. The Synod additionally dismissed the ECO as being a Reformed body, stating that the ECO, “by requiring a signed agreement of like belief, exist[s] beyond the boundaries of what it is understood to be Reformed.”

[4] Russian Presbyterians Form General Assembly

Twenty-nine delegates from across Russia gathered in Moscow in October 2012 to form Russia’s first Presbyterian General Assembly. Dr. Valdimir Li, pastor of Moscow Presbyterian Church, was elected to a two-year term as the biennial assembly’s first president.

The new general assembly is hoped to make easier the registration of Russia’s Presbyterian churches, as these churches have previously had to be registered under the auspices of a variety of interdenominational umbrellas in order to be considered legal.

The new general assembly will additionally work to develop faculty for Reformed theology courses at Moscow Evangelical Christian Seminary, which currently offers only general courses.

The next general assembly meeting is scheduled for 2014 on Sakhalin Island, which is home to many Presbyterian congregations founded and sponsored by Koreans.

[5] PCUSA’s Stony Point Conference Center Housing 100 People Displaced by Hurricane Sandy

The Presbyterian Church (PCUSA)’s Stony Point Conference Center (SPCC) in Stony Point, New York is located on high ground about a one mile from the Hudson River’s widest point, and only lost power during the worst part of Hurricane Sandy. Many of those living closer to the river bank were flooded by the hurricane’s eleven-foot storm surge, and lost their houses and all of their belongings.

Due to the many people displaced by the hurricane, SPCC has for the time being set aside its role as a conference center, and is instead providing long-term housing for sixty adults and forty children. SPCC Communications Manager Paula Sandusky remarked “Some of the folks we’re working with say we should have given them a cut-off date, but that doesn’t feel right to us….We’re footing the bill for food, the overtime cost of providing three meals a day, seven days a week, plus extra heating costs.”
