Delegates from Sixty-Two Countries Meet at Evangelism Explosion Congress of Nations in South Africa

Delegates from Sixty-Two nations have gathered in Cape Town, South Africa 14-18 October 2013 for a Congress of Nations sponsored by Evangelism Explosion International, a global outreach that trains people to share their faith in Jesus Christ.

The assembly of Evangelism Explosion leaders from every continent is "very important to the worldwide ministry of EE and, more importantly, to fulfilling Christ's mandate to take the gospel message to every tribe and every nation," said Dr. John B. Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International.

Nearly 7.9 million people worldwide professed faith in Jesus Christ through Evangelism Explosion in 2012 and the Congress gives delegates the opportunity to strategize on how to reach even more people with the gospel. Nation delegates will share methodologies and approve a series of resolutions that will be included in a formal Declaration issued at the conclusion of the strategic conclave.

The gathering in Cape Town comes three years after delegates from thirty nations participated in the first Congress of Nations in 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. That inaugural Congress launched a new approach to the global work of EEI in which indigenous EE organizations partner to strategize and work together for the effective spread of the gospel.

Founded in 1962 by the late D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., EE was planted in every nation by 1996. It is now intentionally shifting governance of the evangelism equipping outreach away from the U.S.-based organization to a growing international covenanted network of free-standing EE partnerships.

Each national EE group at the Congress of Nations has met a rigorous set of twelve standards necessary to participate and to be designated as an Evangelism Explosion "Multiplying Nation." Qualifying national groups must be self-supporting and have a board of directors, a national director, paid field staff, and an annual action plan. They must also be actively implementing EE in churches nationwide.

"By the 2016 Congress, our goal is to, again, double the number of multiplying nations; this time from sixty-two to more than 120 in a short three years! We're on our way to meeting and possibly exceeding that goal," said Sorensen.

EEI's ultimate goal is for the EE movement in every country to achieve multiplying nation status.

The Congress of Nations includes pageantry with a ceremony in which delegates march into the assembly hall, each carrying their nation's flag.

"It's not just a ceremony," says Sorensen. "Each of these participating nations represents ministries that are having a profound impact on the world through training people to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. That's the ultimate goal -- reaching every tribe, every nation and every people group with the good news of salvation through Christ alone!"

Repaired Capitol Hill Ten Commandments Monument Re-Dedicated

The Ten Commandments monument which stands in the front of the Honorable William J. Ostrowski House, the headquarters of Faith and Action in the Nations Capital that had been toppled by vandals in September 2013 was rededicated Tuesday 29 October 2013 in an 11 a.m. ceremony attended by religious, civic, and political leaders. The house and monument are located across the street from the private east entrance to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The monument was originally installed in 2006 after a multi-year legal battle with Washington DC government officials. The 850-pound granite sculpture is a replica of four similar monuments removed by a federal court order from the front lawns of public schools in rural Adams County, Ohio in 2003. The sculpture was given to the Rev. Rob Schenck of Faith and Action, a Washington, DC based Christian ministry to top federal government officials. It was installed at an angle designed so that the nine justices of the Supreme Court can view it as they arrive at and leave their building across the street.

The program consisted of:

-- Remarks on the importance of the Ten Commandments and of the monument on Capitol Hill

-- A report on police investigation and pursuit of perpetrators

-- The unveiling of the repaired monument

-- A reading of the Ten Commandments

-- A prayer of dedication

-- Question and answer period

Dr. Michael Milton Commentary: A Prayer for Revival as a Little Prince is Baptized

The "Telegraph" reports that as Prince George is to be baptized [23 October 2013], he joins "the majority of Britons" who identify themselves as Christians. Of course, the culture in Great Britain -- and in the U.S., the Commonwealth of Nations, and Western Europe, which also claims a majority Christian population -- is increasingly secular by even the most optimistic evaluation. The report should cause believers to pray.

One might pray, indeed, for the future king's reign and ask that there might be a vibrant Christian faith renewed in the West. As Josiah, through Hezekiah, found the Torah in the Temple, (2 Kings 22:11), may George be surrounded by godly ministers and find Christ in the Cathedrals.

Lord of all, who has defied the gloomy prospects of doomsday naysayers before with surprising acts of undeniable spiritual revival, each act a glorious display of the crowning intervention in human history when Thy Son, our Savior, Christ Jesus, pierced the awful night of our imprisonment with the golden rays of an eternal light so bright that sinners were saved, lives were transformed, and entire nations were changed from brute idolaters into fellow worshippers of the one true God with angels and archangels, the prophets, apostles, martyrs, and all of the faithful; we believe that Thou canst come in power upon this child, George of Britain, and use him to rediscover the magnificent treasures that the knowledge of Jesus Christ hold for him and his subjects and the world, even as we pray for other children, all over the world, being dedicated to Thee, with all of the promise and potential that they, too, hold through Thy power and providence; praying, O God, that through Thy wondrous power, on this little prince, the everlasting Prince of Peace will be magnified to a world in desperate need -- a world which, if Christ should tarry in His Second Coming, we cannot even imagine from this distance -- and, we pray, that Thy creation may see not only spiritual revival, but, finally, the cosmic revival of all things, so that Paradise is restored, mankind and all of Thy creation -- infected by the rebellion of Satan and the fallen angels, and the tragic choice and Fall of the human race -- is redeemed, renewed, and resettled in a New Heaven and New Earth, through the singular victory of Christ on the Cross, never to suffer war, pain, or death any more. These things we pray, on this Occasion of the Baptism of Prince George of Britain, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The “Gadfly” Is Home after Being Deported from Iran: Pastor Eddie Romero Has Arrived Back in Southern California after Being Held for Thirty-Two Hours following a Daring Protest on Behalf of Five Prisoners of Faith

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

LOS ANGELES, CA (ANS) -- The Rev. Eddie Perez Romero, a minister at the Hacienda Christian Fellowship, La Puente, California, has arrived back in Southern California after being arrested outside of the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, Iran, following his audacious protest on behalf of five prisoners of faith, including Saeed Abedini, the American pastor who has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for his Christian activities conscience.

Romero, who is also known as the “Gadfly”, was held for 32 hours after his protest and then took refuge at the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, was greeted by a large crowd of supporters at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, October 23, 2013.

The pastor, who made headlines in 2008 when he was arrested in China for his human rights activism at the Beijing Olympics, denounced what he called the “belligerent” Islamic regime, but also said that he had been treated well after being arrested.

He told reporters gathered at the airport, “We had long good discussions. The primary interrogator spoke very good English. We really had a serious, serious discussion.

“To me it was just a wonderful time together,” he added.

Romero protested outside Tehran's Evin prison, calling for the release of five inmates who he said were prisoners of faith and conscience, including a prominent human rights lawyer.

“We have to do things outside the box,” he told supporters and journalists gathered at Los Angeles International Airport.

“Because conventional ways are way too slow, way too slow for people who are languishing in prison, way too slow for families who are hurting to have their loved ones back.”

What made his protest amazing was that Romero managed to livestream about five minutes of his protest, before being arrested and taken into the prison for questioning, according to organizers.

He had been traveling with a tour group but left it three days before the protest, and went into hiding. Reports suggested he stayed at the Swiss embassy in Tehran.

“I'm a little bit unkempt right now, only because I have spent four nights on the streets of Tehran as a homeless person,” he told reporters.

“At least that's what I appeared to be, until I was able to go to the gates of the prison and raise my protest, and then be taken in,” he added.

Explaining why he did it, he said: “It is for freedom that Jesus Christ has set us free, not for bondage, not for tyranny. It's important for the church to understand that, and to work in many ways outside the box.”

“It's enough for a belligerent government to try to stop people to have a good conscience and freedom of faith… I'm just thankful to the Lord for the journey that we've been able to have here.”

The prisoners here protested on behalf are:

1. Farshid Fathi, an Iranian Christian pastor
2. Saeed Abedini, a naturalized American citizen from Iran who started an orphanage in Tehran and was arrested
3. Mostafa Bordbar, a Christian activist
4. Alireza Seyyedian, a member of a Christian house church
5. Mohammed Ali Dadkhah, a prominent human rights lawyer in Tehran and co-founder of Defenders of Human Rights in Iran

And if they have learned of his courageous stand on their behalf, they must be thrilled that a Hispanic Christian pastor was willing to put his life on the line on their behalf. The least we can now do is to pray for each one of them and thank him for his most unusual protest.

Church of Scotland Criticizes Proposals to Ban the Distribution of Condoms in Edinburgh’s Seven Licensed Saunas

A 24 October 2013 Pink News article titled “Church of Scotland: Banning Condoms in Saunas Will Hamper Fight against HIV” reports that the Church of Scotland has criticized alleged police proposals to curb the distribution of condoms in Edinburgh’s seven licensed saunas because a ban would result in unprotected sex and higher rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

The Church of Scotland praised the Edinburgh city council for rejecting the police proposal. Convener of the Kirk’s HIV programme the Rev. Dr. Robin Hill said:

“While issues of criminality need to be considered very seriously in licensing processes, it would be folly to ignore the risks associated with a possible increase in the incidence of unprotected sex in Edinburgh’s saunas.”

Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) of Nashville, Tennessee in Lawsuit is Accused of Covering for Child Molester

By Kevin Lessmiller

NASHVILLE (CN) - A [
Presbyterian Church in America] church covered up for a "confessed child molester," and "in cult-like fashion" put children in the molester's so-called "safe house," a family claims in court.

Austin Davis and his daughter Daisy sued the
Covenant Presbyterian Church of Nashville [, Tennessee] and its parishioner Dale Lewelling, in Davidson County Court.

Lewelling is not the alleged molester. The Davises claim Lewelling "assaulted the plaintiffs in an open hallway filled with people" during a period of turmoil at the church.

Austin Davis said in an interview that the alleged assault in the hallway came after he attended a class as a former member of the church.

"I got separated from my daughter and they were telling me I was breaking the law," Davis said. His daughter was a minor at the time.

In the lawsuit, Davis claims that on July 14, 2008, "the defendants quietly accept[ed] the resignation of the confessed child molester, John Perry, from the Covenant Diaconate, with Lewelling recorded in the board minutes as being present in the room."

Perry is not a party to the lawsuit, which continues: "The defendants intentionally conceal[ed] knowledge of the confessed child molester from appropriate authorities, the majority of the members of the congregation, and the plaintiffs. ...

"In furtherance of the concealment of the sexual abuse of a child or children, the defendants permit[ted] the confessed child molester to remain a member of Covenant (having access to the church, its members, and the private school elementary property associated with the church) until 2010." (Parentheses in complaint.)

The Davises claim they were harassed, and ultimately assaulted, because they "were privy to information concerning defendants' concealment and concealment efforts of the unlawful sexual abuse of a child or children."

Austin Davis claims that in 2008 he objected to "the defendants' cult-like abuse of authority over vulnerable children ... who were (in cult-like fashion) intentionally, knowingly, and willfully placed in an alleged 'safe house' owned and possessed by the confessed child molester." (Parentheses in complaint.)

Davis claims in the lawsuit that Perry was excommunicated on June 6, 2010, "for heinous and repetitive sin against his family."

In October 2012, Davis claims, the defendants threatened "to have plaintiffs arrested and thrown in jail," threatened to sue them "for no reason," threatened "to bring criminal actions" against them, defamed and intimidated them. The unnerving incidents allegedly culminated in the Oct. 21, 2012 assault, during which, Davis claims, Lewelling was acting as an employee or agent of the church.

Austin said in the interview that he had a right to be on church property.

"I think they're public places that people are allowed to go to," he said.

Davis claims he and his daughter "live under a continuing threat of arrest for communicating with Covenant members and threat of arrest for returning to Covenant property," while Perry "walks around a free man" because the defendants filed "to report the child molester to the appropriate authorities."

Covenant Presbyterian Church of Nashville did not respond to a request for comment.

The Davises seek punitive damages for malicious harassment, assault, and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention.

They are represented by
Duncan Cates Cave.
